Hi Guys Have any of you out there in guitar land ever heard of a player called Mauritz Lotz. I picked up a single off the radio in .....um....94/95 called...

My cousin Richard Onraet has gigged with Tony Cox in CT and around the Natal area. he kicks ass on accoustic, and he's a mad drummer too. he's only 18 and his future seems to be very bright. i told him about the forum, but i don't think he's on line much.

For those who don't know Newman, do yourself a favour and pick up any Tananas album. Great introduction to his style (which is so unique).

I once saw a concert many years ago with Mauritz Lotz and Shawn Philips. I thought it was out of this world.

Anybody got the Piet Botha & Jack Hammer CD, Highway 13. He is a pretty accomplished guitarist himself. Not shredding stuff, but rather tastefull folk-rock style. Really worth a buy.

hi lawrance, I believe mauritz is a studio muso. don't know if there are alot of solo albums of him though

It is a pity, and we have some wicked good guitarists in SA. A good example is Jaun "Floors" Oosthuizen.

Yes he was at Pretoria Tech music school. Apparently a brilliant guitarist.

I've only seen his stuff on Tv but I think Nibs Van der spuy is also a great South African guitarist. I really like Jimmy Dludlu aswell. He is propably the guitarist that gets the most coverage in South Africa.With "die gemaskerde kitaar speller" in second.

Has anyone heard of Nibs Van Der Spy? I was taught classical by him for quite a while ? He now tours and supports his new albums (last one I have is called "beautiful feet")
Its pretty awesome.

This topic made me listen to Lotz's "Earthtones" again on the weekend. He is truely, truely a world class guitarist. He has a fantastic sense of composition and he has serious, serious speed too. He is underrated because he is not marketed enough as a solo artist.

Nibs is a good mate of mine, really amazing guitarist!!! Most humble guy too, he'll compliment the most beginner guitarist, and the guy feels good walking away and later sees him jamming, happend to me years back.. Haha

Dan Patlansky is AWESOME, really love is stuff, great tone too!!

Actually a baritone guitar - made for Cox by Ian Corr down in the Eastern Cape. Google "Ian Corr" and "guitars".

Players I have seen recently - Tony Cox, Justin Taylor, Sez Adamson, Colin Shapiro.

Players I haven't seen that recently but who I believe to still be active - Jamie Scholfield, Steve Newman, Tim Parr, Larry Amos.

The late Johnny Fourie was a marvellous player, and everybody I know who has met him speaks well of him and regards him as a gentleman.

+1 Johnny Fourie, The only person I have ever gone up to after a gig and confessed my utter admiration for his guitar playing :-[

I had to perform in front of that monster once for a tech audition. I have never been so stressed. He was very humble though and the world of music loist alot when he passed away. I have a fantastic jazz recording of his.
