Wiki entry on Paco de Lucia

I just read a Wikipedia article (part of which is quoted below) on Paco de Lucia and at the bottom, saw this very interesting paragraph. I have been listning to different parts of Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez for more than a year now (I think) and apparently Joaquín Rodrigo prefers Paco's interpretation to any other... now we are talking John Williams, Julian Bream, David Russell.....I just thought people might find it interesting.

Disclaimer: I don't agree or disagree with this article or with Rodrigo. I am just quite intrigued by the whole thing.

Until asked to perform and interpret Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez in 1991, de Lucía was not proficient at reading musical notation. As a flamenco guitarist, he claimed in Paco de Lucía-Light and Shade: A Portrait that he gave greater emphasis to rhythmical accuracy in his interpretation of the Concierto at the expense of the perfect tone preferred by classical guitarists. Joaquín Rodrigo declared that no one had ever played his composition in such a brilliant manner.[3] Since de Lucía was not able to read music, he worked on his interpretation of the concerto with Narciso Yepes.

Ray PMed me about it and I am embarrassed about the whole thing coz it has no happy ending.

Tish's dual source distorted so I replaced the battery but that didn't help. When I plugged in, I distorted too so then I decided to set up condenser mic between 2 of us. Yay distortion is gone but we are frazzled and volume is too low and pushing it up would just cause feed.

The mixer decided it wants to adjust volume at it's whim.

So now I am taking the mixer in and we are already using 2 acoustic amps. My dual source's pre amp has been replaced but nothing wrong with Tish's.

In the end we gave an apologetic performance.

yeah about paco not reading ........ yes flamenco is gypsy/travellers music originating from a time where the flamenco players were not educated musicians so no one was reading the parts..........and neither were flamenco musicians not schooled in music conservatories from age 5 like the classical musicians of the time ...... everything was passed down from player to player in realtime, much like blues and african music.............. thats also why the basic traditional flamenco form is so simple musically but complex rhythmically ......and not nearly as complex musically as classical music.......... basically it's more of a feel thing ...........

Bummer man. Well, in a weird way it's kind of better that it was the gear wasn't it? I guess it sucks either way.

You got a plan for the gear issues? Do you have your own PA rig?

Yes the pickup has been fixed. We are now using 2 Laney A1 65W amps that we got at a really good price and this is sufficient for most of our gigs.

Yes we have our own PA rig. The desk is really messed and decided to reveal that on the night of the performance so I'll take it in for repairs but was already told I'll most likely have to replace it.

So we are up and running again. When your sound is bad, it really affects your playing. It's tough to stay inspired when you don't agree with what comes out the speakers LOL.

Well....LOL....The manager said so but I doubt it. It's sad really...we have had some good gigs since.

I did offer the next gig free of charge but I suspect if I push more there might be a restraining order....

Yes. Well this is the thing we auditioned for this one and they loved our playing but then our sound had to get a poltergeist on the night of the performance.

I might have to make the cover of men's health or OMagazine for my confidence to be restored.
