☹
I'm sorry Alan but quoting 1 of the saddest, campest songs of all time by that Irish loonatic is just UNCALLED for - I call 4 your demotion to head ponce - Now I really have a reason not to like this Monday ...
Vintage-Vibe
:-[ ... and by "loon" I mean looney, as in the Looney Tunes !
Wait - that's an insult to good cartoons the world over - may Bugs strike me down with an acme carrot ! ?
AlanRatcliffe
Oh come on! The piano intro is worth the price of admission alone. Sir Bobert may not be quite the most normal of frontmen, but the song is a classic. I have a better idea for that carrot if you disagree...

Oh yes! ?
Performed it last night, BTW, to rapturous applause by an audience who mostly were in diapers (or less) when it was recorded!

The song? Or the carrot trick?
to rapturous applause by an audience
Same questions apply.
who mostly were in diapers (or less)
Well, this just keeps on getting better and better...

@ Alan:
Well spotted on the triple entendre! ?
For the record and posterity of GFSA forum readers, NOT the carrot. If I ever had to, though, wouldn't be an ACME carrot. Woolworths fresh produce, no compromise. ?

Yeah. Metal was the scape goat. Bottom line is nobody is prepared to accept that they failed their child. Simple. But a suicide alone does not get the media going. Add the all-evil metal and the billions of idiots watching tv and 'ya all go yo'self a show' with damn good ratings. Its denial turned to lies turned to sensationalism. Business as usual

Come on let's be truthful
"Icey Cold, rich and gold, down a lion, feel satisfied" (old lion lager ad) surely this must have influenced a lot of people to drink a lager...

I've always said that celebrities need to have licences to be famous as they have so much influence on kids these days. I wonder if they even think twice about what content they put in their music, or what image they portray etc. I know that sex sells, but there has to be some form of social responsibility. But hey, if they make that much money i suppose why should they care...
MiKeZilLA
Sadly i would have to say alot of the folk in question are in it for the money... but social responsibility... at the expense of creative freedom? As an artist I would like to think whatever i create i have the right to share. There are stickers on the albums warning of the content. I think as a society we need to become more aware. Having spent some time working in theatres what we allow kids to watch is legislated and in most instances policed quite strictly. Why then do we only have advisory stickers on cd's i'm saying a 10 year old kid shouldn't be allowed to walk into a store and buy a slipknot cd make the parent go in look at the cd fork over the cash and hand it to 10 year old johnny. Problem is at the moment mom's have no clue what their kids listen too and don't particularly care as long as they don't go around killing folk or otherwise ruining there plans for the weekend.

Is music this powerful? Can Slipknot make you kill people?
Very controversial topic. There must be a lot of reasons and circumstances that make people kill. I personally dont think that Slipknot would influence people to kill others, but rather people that have spiralled way out of control could be drawn to listening to darker music like Slipknot.
Blaming the parents is also a twofold thing. You can bring up 2 kids in exactly the same set of circumstances and love, and if one is not as succesfull as the other, is it the parent's fault? I dont think so, but on the other hand it is the duty of the parent to set boundaries and train your kids to eventually become successful adults. This is the most difficult task in the world.
Like Alan said writing music about cleaning teeth isn't going to cure the world of bad breath and put dentists out of work.
On the other hand listening to some music does make me quite depressed, especially radio stations like Highveld or whatever equivalent you have in your part of the world.
MiKeZilLA
yup i'm personally of the view their should be an advisory sticker on the entire carpenters back catalogue - while we're on the subject of depressing

@Squonk
Don't get me wrong i'm not saying it's the parents fault in this case or the manner in which parents deal with this particular issue i'm just saying - i'm seeing more and more evidence of a shared set of societal values taken from mass media caused by general apathy of parents who believe they can trust the television movies and music to teach their kids the ways of the world.
What i am saying again though is i don't think all music is suitable for kids. Whether or not it will lead them to kill, teach them some dirty words or worse still release a cd of Britney speares covers when they grow up is beside the point we should be protecting our kids from content that is not meant for them

MikeZilla
I agree with you completely on this issue. Parents cannot trust TV, Internet or Celebrities to install proper values for our children, it's the parents job.
The point I was trying to get accross was that even if you do train up children they can still make their own choices.
TV is most probably the more destructive because of it's subtle influence on children. It's not the evil dark programs that we must worry about it's these American sitcom's that subtlely degrade family values.
Children should take their time in becoming adults. Your 10 year old daughter should be playing with dollls rather than listening to Britney Spears

Lets be realistic about this. There are many psycho's out their that would kill people for influences other than music (Television, computer games, religion, a chick, money and many more). Some people simply have a screw loose. There are many other factors that led to this kids rampage (social environment, upbringing, mental conditions and drugs all could have played a major role- even more a significant of a role than listening to slipknot or cradle of filth etc etc)
Yes music is hugely influential on peoples lives- just look at all the copycat suicides after Curt Cobaine died. But one thing i am certain of is that, like the kid who went on his slipknot rampage, these people were all mentally unwell.
So my answer to "Can music make u kill people?"
NO!! If you are going to murder someone (Premeditated) it is because you are a sick SOB. This kid would have killed weather he listened to Slipknot or Britney Spears. Although, I too feel like killing people when i listen to Britney ?
