Which pedal goes where?
Charlie4
OK. so I finally got some gear from the States. ?
I'm still a noob when it comes to effects loops etc. so please help a brother out.
I have a Fulltone OCD, MXR Smart Gate and Vox Tonelab and would like to know if they are put in straight in the input or the effects loop,
as well as what order the effects should be.
So...

Maybe the right way is that one, where your tone is best to your ears?

Diving in at the deep end, eh? ?
Depends on how you use them and which Tonelab. GH is right in that you need to experiment (a
lot
- given the relative complexity of a multieffect like the Tonelab) One thing though - If you have the Tonelab, you probably won't need the Smart Gate - the one in the Tonelab will likely work better.
The Tonelabs have modelled speaker and amp simulations - always turn off the speaker sims when using a real amp. If you have the Tonelab LE (which has a send/return loop of it's own), Google "four cable" method and use that as it gives you the ability to use sims or amp preamp on a patch-by-patch basis.
If you
don't have a loop
on the Tonelab,
and use the amp sims
, plug the guitar into the Tonelab and the Tonelab into the effects return (basically bypassing your amp's preamp and using the Tonelab for all sound shaping and the amp for power amp and speaker only). Obviously you use the ability to use your amp's preamp.
If you
don't have a loop
on the Tonelab, and are
not
using the amp sims then plug the Tonelab into the amp's input. Some things that prefer being after drive - like reverb and delay - will be affected a bit though.
OCD will always be in front of the Tonelab - not ideal (you won't be able to put the comp in front of the OCD for instance), but will likely give you the best results there.
Quite honestly, I would probably use the OCD straight into the amp as a simple "plug 'n play" setup (assuming a good amp) and the Tonelab with four cable connection when I wanted more effects power.
