An idea, I think I hatched from Don's post, is to have another poll that people submit topics to and everybody gets to vote for say 2 or 3 of the topics. The highest rated topic gets used in the next competition and removed from the poll. Or am I getting ahead of myself now?
I'm not sure about that, but then I wasn't aware of the other issues that you mention that result in winners either not wanting to nominate or not being able to. The point about unpopular challenges is a valid one. I came up with what I thought was an interesting challenge a while back and there were two takers.
However I see a danger of the reverse situation manifesting - that the most popular style or theme will get elected repeatedly and then the variety aspect disappears and the challenges will all become "bluegrass chicken picking" or whatever else excites a majority.
The trick is to balance popularity with variety.
I would add that a while back I got concerned that turn outs for the competition were dropping, but I started going back through the competitions posted on this board and with the horrible exception I refer to above, I don't believe that average participation is dropping - or increasing for that matter. The names change, but that's to be expected.
