In my experience it's rare to find a bad guitar with "Fender" in bold on the headstock. Just remember, we want you to make sure you start with a good guitar, not take out a second mortgage. ?
The yamaha looks good too! where to get one though? that is a question!
Anyone know where there's one selling in Gauteng?
Amp wise, what about jacking into the auxillay input of a hi-fi? or is that looked down upon? i ask, because honestly, i have no clue!
This really doesn't work so well. But as people say, you can get guitar amplifiers second hand for very little. The kind of practise amp that comes in that kit you were looking at is worth peanuts second-hand. So when you've absorbed the cost of the guitar, you and you just need something you can hear it through, you could ask around the forum for someone whose got a little old one they don't use and will sell it for a reasonable price.
Another option is a multi-effects pedal that can connect to your computer or to the hi-fi. Another option still is a computer interface and some guitar software. But the simplest, and probably the cheapest option, is just to get a cheap little practise amp a little down the road.
Once you're really into it for the long haul, that's when you start looking to get your killer tone, and buying 35 year old valve amplifiers and whatnot.
But you won't get there with a dud guitar.
