Strings and Beyond

I ordered from them a few times over the last year or so, and never had any problems. When I tried to place another order for some strings about a week ago, the online shipping page defaulted to Afghanistan! No South Africa on the drop down list anymore. So I e-mailed them to find out what's going on. The reply:

"Hi and thank you for your email.

We have had issues shipping to South Africa recently therefore we have deleted that country option from our shipping list.

Do you have an agent that can accept the package for you in the US?"

So that's it, it seems... ☹

I assume the issues are customs issues? Or do they mean to say they were victims of credit card fraud or similar?

I really doubt it is the latter...

They didn't specify what the issues were. I assumed it to be theft, probably the same reason why Amazon stopped shipping here. Lousy.

The Amazon thing is a bit muddled. Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk have different positions on shipping to SA. Both will ship via courier, but one (can't remember which) is not keen on sending things in the post.

Interestingly when the story first broke (in Business Day IIRC) one of the reasons cited was that Amazon suspected that people in SA may be given to reporting non-delivery or that goods are defective so that they can get two of whatever they ordered. Last time I bought stuff from Amazon that was defective I had to ship it back to them. The deal was that I had X days (I think 60) to get the goods back to them. If I didn't then they would bill me for the replacement item. They also credited me for my postage costs so I have no problem with their stance here.

I have to say that I have had no problems receiving parcels from overseas in the post. This includes CDs and guitar parts.

Amazon US will not ship anything to SA via post, I'm not sure about the courier thing. And yes, it had to do with theft, too much stuff going missing. Amazon UK I'm not too sure, we always courier stuff anyway.

Perhaps try a supplier in the UK, Riaan.

I just placed an order with Amazon.co.uk. They will do post to SA.
