I just want to share some great discovery here with all you guitar nuts.

I have been looking at buying a set of Seymour Duncan SSL single coil pickups for my US Strat for a few months now but it's just the price that's been the debilitating factor, what with all the regular monthly expenses to consider and the ever-present recession still in full swing. So I turned my gaze towards the Tonerider website because of the "unbeatable" prices of their sets and ordered the City Limits bridge and the Classic Blues middle and neck pickups.

The pickups arrived 3 days later at my post office (R60.00 - not bad at all!), very securely packaged in a box that came in a courier bag. Well done Tonerider - excellent service!

I installed them myself the same night (30 minutes work) and almost dropped the guitar (straplock wasn't properly hooked in) in my excitement to start playing.

Wow Wow Wow! - What an incredible surprise! The City Limits bridge and the Classic Blues middle and neck is such a great combo! I love the bridge pickup, it's got balls deluxe and clean at the same time, not thin and metallic like the standard Fender pickups. It also blends exceptionally well with the other two Toneriders. And then there's the build quality - awesome! I expected cheap looking and feeling pickups and hoped that the might sound OK, and instead I got amazing quality and incredible tone!

What a fantastic combination - all for a thousand bucks!

I'm so chuffed I thought I'd share with you oke's

Peace! ?
Good post fireaxe. This and many other positive posts on this forum, putting Tonerider on my radar for future pup replacement efforts.
Toneriders for the win eh ..

i love the tone i get outta them
Lots of people saying good things about Toneriders. I am thinking I want to slap some into an Ibanez hollowbody - P90's is what I am thinking. Would P90's and a hollowbody jive?
Ray.. P90s in a hollowbody are very very nice.. Responsive to feedback but sound GREAT.

I had a set of P90's (Lindy Fralins at $195 for the set before shipping) fitted into a Telecaster years back and it sounded fantastic. I reckon P90's should sound great in a hollow body. Never tried THAT myself though!
The title of this thread seems to suggest a comparison between pups A and pups B whereas it merely states that pups B are better than stock pups of product C ☹

At least now you know your ABC's!
Aja I think that was as relevant as the SD reference in this thread.

I decided not to bring it up in fear of the rabid Tonerider fanboys here.

                    Sorry :sorry:

I was just causing trouble with gearhead...

:-[ I was so caught up in my own excitement that I completely missed the point I was trying to make, that is that although Seymour Duncan is still my favorite brand, I have been knocked over by the quality and sound of the Tonerider pickups that I had purchased at a third of the price.

So I've been thinking "Tonerider versus Seymour Duncan" and why I've been paying so much more for American Seymour Duncan products when there is a good inexpensive alternative on my doorstep? These Tonerider pups are doing exactly what I've been "hearing" in my head for a while now and I'm happy as a pig in a pigpen. They do as good a job, if not better, than my other expensive pups.

Why buy Toneriders when the stock pups are decent? Most likely half of what you're hearing is the placebo effect.

He never said he thought the stock pups were decent. He was contemplating SDs and bought Toneriders on price and is delighted with what he hears. Don't know how you can suggest that what he hears is a placebo effect. Is it maybe that you can't hear the difference?
He didn't have to say they were decent. Most stock pups are.

I can actually here the difference Pete. I have had Toneriders, I have had Seymour Duncans. I always record before and after clips so I can be SURE of what I hear.

My point was that you usually get what you pay for, if you want something better than stock, get Toneriders. If you want something better than those, get Seymours. Better still contact Lollar.
So when you buy the Lollars and like them, wouldn't that be all in your head as well? Taste is personal. Who knows why we like what we like.

Yep it often is subjective. But people on this forum have a nasty habit of gunning "expensive" brands without actually having experience with them.

True - I don't think this was the case 'though. Fireaxe sounds genuinely pleased with his purchase and good luck to him.
No doubt. The Toneriders are nice pups - especially for the price.

I don't understand that statement. Is experience a prerequisite for buying anything???
