So I got my Line6 UX-2 setup with an old Roland vocal mic. I used Audacity to test the setup and it's well, decent. I'm looking for something better, not expecting studio quality, but better than what I can get with Audacity. Gonna be recording practice sessions (vocals, bass, acoustic and electric guitar at the same time) and some pre studio recording . Need something that does a decent drum track as well.
I'm also in the market for an SM57 or comparative AKG.

For me the first thing is to get a better host program.....for me Reaper is hard to beat.
a) It's free as an opened ended, full featured demo (Although there is a small license fee)
b) is very stable
c) takes all formats of plug-ins well
d) is fairly easy to learn.
Second, get a good audio interface if you don't already have one. There are many threads here on GFSA about that.
Third, you need a good all-purpose mic. SM57 is a good "Swiss army knife type of mic and can be used for vocals (With the A2WS Windshield) and most instruments. (BTW I have found most modern AKG Dynamic mics to not cut the grade IMHO)
Fourth: Get a good pair of headphones or small studio monitors. Also get decent cables to hook everything up.
Fifth....Spend lots of time learning/playing/having fun with your setup.
