Hi All,
I'm new to the forum and ended up here as a result of really being stuck with my effects chain and need some guidence. I have the weirdest problem with a DD-20. It sits second to last in a chain that consists of the following: Gibson LP - TU2 - OD1 - Amp PreAmp - BF3 - CH1 - DD20 - Jamman Looper - AmpPowerAmp
I recently got the Boss CH1 second hand and it worked fine when tested. Brought it into my chain and all of a sudden it gives a strange hum when switched on. It has been frustrating me for some time as the pedal works fine on its own, but as soon as i bring it into the chain it has a hum when turned on. BUT!!!! last night I accidently switched off the lighting on the LCD display of the DD-20 and voilla!!! noise is gone! Beyond all my reasoning I cannot understand why the backlight of the DD-20's display can cause a hum in only one of the also boss pedals in the chain before the DD-20. All the rest are silent even with high gain. STRANGE!!! Can anyone give me some advice - obviously I would like to have the display switched on as I would like to make sure I'm on the right beat modes for rythmic delays. Sorry for the long post. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on the issue or anyone who would just give me their shoulder to cry on about weird stuff in pedals! hehehe.

How are you powering the pedals? Batteries? Individual power supply per pedal? Single power supply feeding all pedals?
When you turn the display off on the CH-1 the current drain of the pedal is reduced, so I'm thinking this problem is to do with power and load imposed on the power supply/ies

+1 on the power supply - my first thought was it'll be an earth loop caused by a single supply with a daisy chain. But it could also be that you're exceeding the power draw of the supply (DD-20 is relatively power hungry). Try the chorus (CH-1 - nice, BTW) on a battery. If the problem goes away, that's the cause.

Firstly a big thanks for your responses and it makes a lot of sense. I am actually making use of two seperate powersupplies. One is the AC-DC Powerbank(450mA) that drives the DD-20(168mA) seperately and a Boss 200mA PS that drives the CH1, BF3 & OD1 through the TU-2 as their power usage aren't that high from what I understand. I have had the DD-20 on the 200mA PS and the rest on the Powerbank, but still it gives the same issue. I can live with the DD-20 display switched off, as I'm just glad I can use my rig now, but it would be nice to be able to have it on though. Once again thanks for the replies.

Have you tried running the DD-20 and the CH-1 together off the powerbank?
EDIT: Have you tried running all your pedals off the Powerbank?

this is a common problem on all effects pedals from all brands and is caused by a power supply running out of juice. on specs it would suggest that there could be enough power but it actually works like this:
if you have a 500ma power supply running 5 pedals, it leaves 100ma on average for each pedal...
only a regulated power supply will "borrow" enough power to supply each pedal even if you have a 2A power supply.
there is an easy way to fix this because your tuner has a power out with enough juice to supply at least two other boss pedals. this will also eliminate the need for two power supplies on your board. also, be sure to upgrade your psa230p boss power supply to the new psa230s wich has more than double the juice and was designed to accomdate an average of 5 pedals

Thanks for all the advice guys. I tried what Tomcat suggested to run the DD-20 and CH-1 together on the powerbank alone at first and it worked! No noise at all. So Christo's part about consumtion was also spot-on. Well all of you suggested powersupply issues. One of those "why didn't i think about that" situations. Thanks a mil though!

most definite, YES! ?
