For some reason, it's more the thickness of the neck that gets me than the width - especially on the shorter scale lengths. my left hand cramps up quicker the thinner the neck is. My preference is .860" at first fret on a Fender scale length and about .090" on a Gibby (and the Gibby will still make my hand cramp).
Thumb wraps are mostly down to practice. I can thumb wrap on my 12-string (which has a 1-7/8" nut), but my classic (2" wide at nut) is difficult as hell and I'm likely to mess up part of the chord.
