Oh, I swore never to return because P90s can be too hot and unforgiving of mistakes in playing but then a perfect storm:
1. A new music store opens with a couple of good deals.
2. I spot, IMHO, one of the best looking guitars I seen in a while (I do have quirky taste). PRS SE Soapbar
3. It plays beautifully despite (or maybe because of!) its fat-wide neck. I've been on skinnys too long.
4. I do a side by side with the same model basically but with humbuckers, and ooooooh... much better punch on the soapbars, bordering on dangerous if you're not an articulate player. No I'm not.
5. Have a look at some reviews just to make sure folks are happy and the mags like them.
6. Falls into my price range preference (it's low end model but good quality), don't feel like I'm robbing my family or taking my life savings on stage.
7. ITS BEEN DISCONTINUED. Now, I'm just bloody otherwise... if something gets good reviews and is discontinued (much like my AXS32) because people don't like P90s or some other reason I tend to want it even more.
Negs: It's got moon fretboard markers which I'm not crazy about (not the design, just the fact that they're there at all) and a wraparound bridge which limits fine tuning and probably kills sustain. That's it.
Let's see how I do with the P90s. My second guitar had P90s and I did ok with them live but that was many many moons ago when I had more time to practise...
ps. Alan, did did have the vintage cherry in stock but the sunburst just does it for me (although I prefer the black pup covers)
So, without further ado (I will post more of my own pics some time, PRS blurb below):
"The SE Soapbar is a solid mahogany, single-cutaway guitar with a 22-fret, wide-fat mahogany neck and two soapbar pickups. The mahogany construction and fat neck accentuate the midrange while the soapbar pickups give you bright sparkling highs."
