Mariann used my TC8W amp at church Saturday evening and after the meeting I moved the amp on stage for another guitarist to use Sunday Morning...with one small but fatal error.......I forgot to plug the cab back into the head. Come Sunday morning I get a call from church......."your amp is not working and there is a funny smell coming out of the amp"......... ? ?
Result is that the output tube and possibly the OT went US......the heater supply also went freaky and burnt out the hum canceling resistors.
Fortunately I had spares of both the tube and OT and had the amp up and running again in no time.
To make maters worse is while I was repairing the amp I went and put my soldering iron down on my PC mouse and totaled that as well....... :-[

Bad Luck Tom ☹
at least you got it up and running again ?

Hey Tom, you put the soldering iron on the mouse???? :roflmao: :roflmao:
Thousand apologies Tom, but I can see the funny side of your "fun filled weekend" , I know it's no joke, but I cannot help laughing........
We all do strange things from time to time, and really get the M**R in, but like they say .......... "stuff (not gonna use the other word) happens"...... hope you got it all sorted........ POOR MOUSE!!!!!.............. LOL..........
MikeM
Why do you have spare OTs just lying around? ?
That's a real pity but glad it's sorted.

It was rather funny afterward as I was so busy concentrating on the innards of the amp that it took a while to realize that something was burning..... :-[ :-[
The mouse still sort of worked but the right click button got really schizophrenic when you tried to right click..... ??? ?

I was about to use it to build an amp for Mariann.
I did test it with a multimeter once I had removed it from my amp and it seems to be OK so there is still hope.... ?

Why dont you connect some kind of switch to the speaker output, so that it can only switch on once the speaker cable is inserted?
dont know if its possible, but would be a cool safety feature for valve amps.
MikeM
Ah, did you get it from Karel?
I see cool cool ? When're we going to see the new build? ? Is it going to be based on your design?

hey man, thats a terrible thing to have happened to you, we played a show with an extremely ungratefull band this weekend, the guy "forgot" to bing his amp so he asked if he could use one of mine, being a nice guy and all i agreed, the dude didn't even say thank you, so after a hissy fit cause the engineer wasn't gonna sound check his band and only check the first band playing(us) the engineer agreed to do his check, so this dude comes runnin back to me asking if he could use a cable of ours aswell, we gave him one to use casue we are still nice guys, then he switches on marshall JCM and there's no sound comin out, and this guy is fiddelng with our settings and stuff, i went up there and saw he didn't plug my cab into the output, man i was so P.O'd, i felt like beating this A$$...... with a garden hose. man, thats the last time i lend my stuff out, to make matters worse the guy didnt even thank us or anything and leaves our cable lying on stage and expected us to roll it up and put it back in the bag.

The OT's are Hammond 125ESE transformers I got second hand from a guy in Cape Town.
Regarding the new build it will be basically the same as my current amp, except that I'm going the 6550 as the o/p tube for a little more clean headroom and will be going SS instead of tube on the rectifier, again to get a little more clean headroom.
I'm tailoring the amp to compliment her AFS75T hollow body and then OD it with a mild OD such as a Blues Pro type pedal.
BTW we have now got a killer tone on her AFS through my amp.
Setup: AFS75T(Bridge or Middle) > Boss SD-1 > Boss CH-1 > Ibby DE-7 > Nova Reverb (Spring) > TC8W on Clean Channel
It's a great OD tone, yet with the woody tone of the hollow body still coming through. (I wonder how a P90 (Rebel 90's) setup in the AFS will sound through this??....Hmmmmmm....... :-\)

Shame Tom, that sucks!
Glad to hear the amp is up and running again!
MikeM
Ah, how much did you pay?
Ah I see, cool - 6550s can be a little cold though so take that into consideration when designing it ?
I'm a big fan of P90s in semi/hollows :? So very biased there.

I got the two OT's and two Ellectro Harmonix 6CA-7's for R600.00.....real bargain.......
Regarding the new build I might get a little brave and run two 6550's in parallel to push the power to about 15 to 20w.
I'll then need a bigger OT anyway as the 125ESE will probably not cut it.
I'll bounce this one off Karel as well to see what he thinks.... :-\
My Cathode Bypass caps are on the larger side so that should restore a bit of warmth/character to the amp.
MikeM
2x 6550s will get you a bit more than 15 watts man ?
Personally I'd go for 2x6L6s for better tone ?

I hear you......6550's will need to be biased right back and as you say......cold tone.......
The 6L6's might be a better bet...Bias then a little hotter...more Fender like......

Great profile pic Tom ?

I hear you.....The really dof thing about this is that I did it to myself and could not blame anyone for the mishap.....and that goes for both the amp and the mouse.... ?

Sympathy for the troubles TC. But what a funny story ? Glad it's turned out pretty much ok and that there're new amps on the horizon.

Shocking. I'm in favour of naming and shaming.
