I know this is far from music, but im hoping some of the wise IT kids can help out
So I have a DVD ROM and Windows 7, the 2 just don't seem to get along. When ever I put a CD inside the ROM it has a hard time loading/playin/burning. Causing my computer to freeze. Its a nightmare, cause I want to play my CD's
A friend has the same problem, and he also has Win7. I tried Google, but that is unsuccessful. Any suggestions?

Can you give me more specific computer specs?
Also the DVD make and model?

Got the latest drivers and firmware loaded onto the PC and CDROM?
Ok easy way to check is to look at the DVD Rom Manufacturer's site and download a Firmware update or a tool to do so. update the firmware (specially Samsungs) then try again.
Whilst your there, look for newer drivers for your DVD Rom and install those on Windows and restart (restarting is needed so do it) then try again.
Questions:
Did you upgrade to Windows 7 or do a clean instalation i.e. format and install?
Did you upgrade the DVD rom after you installed windows?
How old is DVD Rom?
If the DVD Rom is in warranty and after a firmware update it still does that, then take it into a PC store to be RMA'd (replaced/fixed). I had a Samsung which did that. Moved to a different model and it was fine.

Ok cool thanks guys.
Well to answer some of your questions
My PC
AMD X2 3400+
2GB RAM DDR2 800mhz
Asus M2N-E Mobo
Nvidia Geforse 8800GT
...
LG GSA-GH20L 20x LightScribe Dual Layer DVD Writer
I havnt upgraded in a good while but I dont see why it should affect burning/reading
@infernox
I havnt tried the firmware, I just assumed win7 would do it automatically. I will try though, but to answer your questions
1) I formatted and installed freshly with win7 so clean instalation
2) Have not upgrade DVD rom at all
3)Got it in July 2008
*oh my win7 is ultimate 64

Windows 7 has tons of issues with drivers.
Interesting fact: they only accept there own audio drivers, so you can't install a 3rd party's sound card software ?
Google Windows 7 and your DVD rom.
Will see if I find something as well.

No offence inflames, but Im using a 3rd Party Razer sound driver for my card and the Asio versions as well.
Fruitar: Windows does not upgrade firmware for you. Essentially the firmware is not a software on the PC, but actually the software which controlls the hardware in the physical device eg. software which is on a chip in the CDrom which controls how it works when plugged in. Nothing to do with windows.
Im running Win 7 64bit and everything except for early release Razer drivers (i use a total of three) gave me issues. I can bet you that this is either a firmware problem of the DVD is on its way out.

Also go look at you autoplay settings. The wrong settings there can really mess things up as well......
