Tauriq Today I'm purchasing a SM57 but I would like to know besides the XLR cable what to get if I want to do decent sounding recordings? I know a need a microphone preamp? What's a reasonably budget friendly option for this if I want to connect it to my PC? Is a mixer necessary? Thanks
AlanRatcliffe You need three things: Mic, preamp and audio interface. Some audio interfaces have decent mic preamps built in (I usually recommend a Edirol UA-25 EX or M-Audio Fast Track). If you already have an interface without mic pre, you can get small single channel mic preamps like the ART MP-1 fairly cheaply.
TomCat Also get yourself a mini boom microphone stand....very handy to get the right mic position in front of the amp. I prefer these: http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1681&brandID=2
AlanRatcliffe Nice! I see it retails at only R345 too. I like the heavy duty short legs and the extendible boom. I'll have to get a pair of those.
