Hey I've been watching this dvd on the making of Dark Side of The Moon right (really brilliant dvd by the way) i remember David Gilmour saying in one of his interviews that most of his lead/solos on the album are just him improvising for a few takes over whatever the band or the backing track was playing, and its usually the first takes that are the best n make the cut. I thought that was quite cool, really gave me an insight on how the great music of PF was made. Hope im not being a noob for pointing out the obvious here haha

That is brilliant - that's in an Eagle Rock Entertainment series of DVDs called Classic Albums, and they have a whole bunch of them, mostly wonderful.

I've got:
Zappa - Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation
AC DC - Back In Black
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Paul Simon - Graceland
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Queen - A Night At The Opera
Steely Dan - Aja
U2 - The Joshua Tree

I them at HMV in London when I was there 2005, Love to get my hands on Zappa and Queen but cant seem to find them locallyot Any Ron Thal CD's for that matter - Any suggestion where I should look ?

I got the Zappa from Amazon.co.uk and the Queen from (I think) CD Wherehouse in the V&A.

The Zappa is really good - Dweezil shows some of Frank's multitrack techniques like the subtle use of the "Mysterioso chord" in Zombie Woof, by isolating and moving them up in the mix. Also I found out that the Backing vox on those two albums were Tina Turner and the other Ikettes - I didn't know that.

You also get to see Dweezil playing and analysing some of Frank's solo parts, parts of an interview with Vai, a part where Ruth plays Rollo Interior (the xylophone part from St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast) and there's a great moment in one of the extras where Dweezil and Ahmet are describing Frank's recording techniques while the music is playing and they both just get totally lost in the music, forgetting to describe the techniques.

Damn it! Now I have to put it on the other monitor.

Now you're making me drool not only at St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast (where I stole the margarine) but at the Dweezle and Steve analysing Franks solos - I must track that DVD down searching Amazon as we speak ?

So we went to the PF tribute concert at the Waterfront last night and really enjoyed it a lot. The band was good, they made a few mistakes here and there but all in all I thought they did the music justice and played a very representative playlist. Inbetween songs the history of the band was narrated and artwork and images projected on a screen, giving a good overview of the history of PF. Mel Botes' guitar playing was really very good. My only criticism would be the sound balance, which was not all that great where we sat, second row from the front - it may have been better a bit further from the stage as the guitar amps were a bit loud relative to the rest of the PA. But it was a good show nonetheless, and highly recommended for Floyd fans.

Mmmm

Just returned from Aardklop and the Crazy Diamonds show. Gotta say that it is really worth your time. If you like PF or not. If you do, then do not even think twice. Just go see the show.

Don't be a tippical guitarist and expect Mel to play every note exactly, with exactly the same tone and exactly the same effects - but for most of the recognisable solos, he keeps it pretty on the dot.

I took my kids to the show and they loved the show too. Most of the songs they recognised any way, but it is a really good change to get a 13 year old away from Snotkop and Greenday, even for just one day.

Renesongs wrote Sorry about the negativity - I think I have seen one too many tribute concert that has left the respected recipients rolling in their graves.

I find the tribute thing a bit wierd actually. A while back my brother-in-law very generously bought the wife and I tickets for a Floyd tribute band that was out here (can't remember the name, they were from NZ). They obviously had put a lot of time and money into their show, and their versions were spot on.

So spot on that one might have been at home listening to the CDs.

It was very odd.

I would rather see somebody who tried to present interpretations, or tried to shine a light on what made the artist and the artist's work so great in the first place. I think that can be done.

I like Gilmour's playing a lot. He's essentially a blues player, limited in some ways, but he has a great feel for dynamics and drama in his playing.

Hi Guys

I saw this show in Johannesburg at the Victory <I am a PInk Floyd fan>, the show I found disappointing <and I had no preconceived ideas>. The show worked from the premise that Roger Waters and Roger Waters only was Pink Floyd, David Gilmour was merely the guitarist and some time vocalist and contributed little musically. The message was that Pink Floyd lived and died by Roger Waters.

I also in my view found the band as a unit very under rehearsed <although the guitar playing in the main was spot on>.

This view was shared by many of the people in the audience <at the bar after the show>.

I did not at any moment get the same idea about the show. I thought as Mel is a guitarist / vocalist himself, he tended more towards emphasizing Gilmour. Well it just shows, I am a Waters fan and would have liked more of Waters. You being the Gilmour fan wanted more Gilmour. The balance means that Mel got it just right by not having pleased any side !! (I love Gilmour too, but I do think Waters contributed more towards the composing side).

Generally I thought there was too much emphasis on the Syd Barret era (about 40 minutes). Syd was the only one who got something from his solo projects included in the show.

I thought the girls doing the backing vocals were great. I was blown by the performance on the Gig in the sky, and the harmonization was very good all around. Surely not an unrehearsed performance!!

Surely not an unrehearsed performance!!

I agree...the show at the Pavillion in CP had, as I said in my earlier post, a few mistakes here and there but nothing disastrous - probably only noticed by fans who also happen to be musos, and who know the music well. Maybe they had a bad night in Jhb at that particular time, I wasn't there so I wouldn't know. My feelings about the show was very positive and I would recommend it to anybody.

I guess the debate about who really constituted Pink Floyd will go on for ages...
