It's the pits again I tell you...

So, I get this loaded phone call from Heather Dix, the musical director of a review to be staged by The Westville Theatre Club, an amateur dramatic society, of which I am a member. "Pete do you know of a guitarist that can do the show for us?"
Me, "Well, I play guitar."
Heather, "Yes I know you do, that's why I phoned you, are you available, there's no money of course being an amateur club and all?"
Me, "Ummm... yeah I suppose I am available."
Heather, "Great, I'll send you the schedule."

So tonight's the first rehearsal night with the orchestra, with a month of rehearsals and one and a half weeks of show nights.

I do have trepidations, since the last time I played in a pit orchestra was for a Hal Orlandini show, staged here in Durban about 35 years ago... hope the pad's not too difficult.

So, as the title of the thread says, "I'm off to the pits again."

Sounds cool ? How would the guitar feature in the orchestra, would you be playing classical stuff?

Naah - it's not an orchestra in the classical sense - the music will probably be a mixed bag of stuff usually popular numbers taken from stage musicals. So the orchestra/band will probably consist of a piano, keyboards/synth for brass and strings, electric bass, a solo violinist, drummer with an array of percussion instruments and guitar - electric and acoustic depending upon what's called upon for each number. So the guitar parts could be a mix of stuff from ballad-type jazz to rock. So flexibility is called for when playing in this type orchestra/band. I'll find out more about what's expected of me tonight.
