Movie - The Boat That Rocked

Currently included in DSTV's movie line up. I caught a chunk of it last night. I am old enough ( ?) to remember pirate radio stations, and I think that LM radio filled the same role in SA in the early 70s.

So it's a great flash back to the time of Radio Caroline and the like. And you have to love a movie where the villainous government creep tasked with shutting the pirate stations down is named Twatt.

Great soundtrack I thought, capturing the marvellous diversity of the 60s. Includes Hendrix, Herb Alpert, Procol Harum, The Kinks and the fab Dusty Springfield.

I'll introduce a bit of Bah!Humbug into this by saying that it was a cool idea but looked like it was written and shot by a comittee. Feel good moment piled on feel good moment, until feel good was the norm and you stopped feeling good.

Looked like they tried to apply the British "small commercial film" treatment to it and decided to paint in watercolour instead of oil.

Yes. Much as I enjoyed the movie, it takes the same turn towards the end where all the endings magically are happy. Life ain't like that, and the plot has to take some unnatural turns.

Sometimes I want the boat to go down with all hands on deck.

Not that I have anything against pirate radio.

Yeah it was ok that it had a happy ending. But they kept on piling one moment after another where you're supposed to go, "Well ain't life grand then," until it stopped being effective.

I thought it got saccharine.
