There are several good dog behaviour specialists around, and there are loads of problems that can be quickly solved. As Lindsmuse is finding out, you need to understand a bit from the dog's POV. They don't think like we do.

That move "Marley and Me" drove me nuts. So much of that could have so easily been avoided.

I've had one issue early on of worrying behaviour in dogs. I called a dog behaviouralist who I heard on SAFM's weekend morning program. She sorted the issue out very quickly after asking me a few questions about the dog and how we responded to them. He'd been wrecking cushions. It stopped within 2 days when I applied her method.

Key thing: We think like humans and because dogs show some intelligence we think they think like us as well. Wrong! They have a differently structured brain, are differently motivated and see the family, or, to them, pack, completely different than we do.

Subsequent to that little episode I enrolled Buster and myself with a good dog training club. He did just the "kindergarten" classes but that taught him how to better behave himself around other dogs and around people.

When I enrolled they asked me what my objective was. I said "Happier dog, happier owner" and with a little effort that's what we got.

Someone lent me one of the series - I think there's more than one. It's 4 DVDs. Each DVD has about 12 or so chapters and in each chapter he deals with about 4 different dogs and their owners - maybe they'd have them at the video shop? Never realised this stuff - and I'm crazy about dogs!

These are all rescue animals barring the third from the top - Fritsi - he came with papers which were bogus it turned out. He's a dachshund / whippet or greyhound cross supposed to be a miniature dachshund!
