Telefunken Tube Radio

Hi guys.

Just found this old Telefunken Tube Radio (or Hi Fi System according to them..) in the Garage. Something that my father bought from an antique shop once..

I was just wondering.. Would any of these parts be usable if I were to build an amp? I'm mainly talking about the bigger things, like the transformers, tubes, etc. The (visible) tube complement that it has is as follows:

1x EM80
1x EL41
1x EBC41
1x EF41
1x ECH42

I'm not too sure whats hiding behind those huge silver and black silos.. Pulled at one of them and they aren't going anywhere.

That is just so cool and retro. I remember when I was small I had a whole bunch of these and delighted myself in taking them apart... (Arrrgh...I know.....would be fun to restore them today).

I even had a working one with the tiger's eye tuning valve and all......kept me entertained for hours.

Those large silo things are the electrolytic caps for the power supplies etc.

I plugged it in, but not much happened.. caps must have dried out, either that or some electrical gremlin lurks therein..

apparently the telefunken el41 belongs in a museum..

Well rip out the guts and modify it!
Make it into a Ipod player or a new amp.

I have an almost identical looking Bush-branded unit. Didn't have those sideways firing speakers though and was in much worse shape.

The mechanics & electrics was completely useless and was thrown out. The cabinet has been restored and a custom built hi-fi class speaker built into it.

Still want to complete the project by adding a new radio into it sometime...

Maybe I'll post some pics sometime. You'd fall off your chair if you see how similar the two look.

Cool radio! Before you take it apart, just give it a chance, it is in great condition, I'm pretty sure that it can be brought back to life within a few hours. Otherwise it will make a nice +/- 3-5 Watt valve amp. I see you are in Hermanus, I'm in Stellenbosch, if you are interested

given how old this thing is, would it be able to receive modern radio signal? ie fm/am?

don't know too much about radios, but i would guess that this radio (which is built for sw, mw and lw) would not be able to pick up our conventional radio signals. am i wrong?

Short, Medium and Long wave are all part of the AM frequency band. The medium wave band is still used by stations like Cape Talk.
There are several stations still broadcasting on the short wave band, but no fm is a bugger though ?

On these oldies a proper antenna is the key to good reception on SW/AM, Cape Talk and RAdio 702 locally on AM (and on SW you can literally roam the world with reception of Russia, China, Holland, BBC, Voice of America, etc etc.
I think I saw somewhere on one of the photos that the receiver is a superhetrodyne design, one of the more advanced designs with better reception so well worthwhile to restore.
