Not my experience. Girls weren't interested in the guys struggling to learn to play Smoke on the Water and Stairway. It was the guys who could bang out Talkin About a Revolution in soulful tones who were getting all the action.
But then, if John Mayer told me his name was John Mayer, I'd suspect he was talking BS ? I can just imagine the scene. He plays Your Body Is A Wonderland. The ladies get all hot and bothered. He puts his guitar down and starts talking about his chronic masturbation over pictures of his ex. The aforementioned ladies pick up their drinks and move elsewhere. John keeps talking, having not noticed.
