I played drums in a band called Armed Populous for a few years (not my fault - they had it when I joined them). Long story, concerning a fake Hunter S. Thompson quote, a guitarist who was still learning English and a printer who couldn't spell...
Otherwise the band that used to share gigs with Pink Floyd wins the prize IMO: The Utterly Incredible Too Long Ago to Remember Sometimes Shouting at People.

A mate played for a band called "Aeroplaza" (apologies if a former member is reading this). But man! That's a sucky name.

This is quite interesting! Especially like the Afrikaans translations! ? ? ?
When I was 1st year at Varsity I played in band called Aftereign (the catch was that there was 1 "r" - for some or other reason ??? ???). With Stellenbosch being more of a Afrikaans town, people constantly called us After rain and asked why we don't call ourselves sun since that appears after the rain. But ja, that was pretty kak. Only played 1 gig and then the band broke up (probably cause of the name - can't remember, I was 1st year varsity!)
I see a lot of US band names but what I hate more than terrible names are people folloing trends. Like we had a while back with the whole "the" thing. The Hive, The White Stripes, The Strokes etc etc. In ct at the moment, it looks like putting the name "wolf" in you band is cool as well... (New altum - Versus the wolf, You cried Wolf) But ja, that's just my opinion! ? ?

At the end of the day muso's spend waaay to much time trying to find a kewl kAtChIe name for their band far too little time doing the more important things like playing your instrument or writing good lyrics or booking your next venue. It doesn't matter what you call your band the name becomes kewl or kak depending if people like the music or not. Think of it this way would you buy the music or go to a concert of a band you think is mediocre but have a really kewl name.

Remember a band called
Steppenwolf ?......."Born to be wild" (I think)

Another lupine reference Wolfmother. Steppenwolf got their name from a novel by the same title by Herman Hess. I think it is quite safe to get plagiarise band name from Authors , after all they know how to write words and things. Uriaih Heep, Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, spring to mind however Shakespeare's Sister leaps from my bowl.

Oooh, I like that. I would say say it in a growl every time. You can't say it normally, it would sound weird.
There are lots of names that are less well known that you could find easier to rip off, but as far as well known ones go I think Def Leopard is pretty silly. I mean, "Definitely Leopard", "Deaf Leopard", either interpretation is bad. They'd even be better off being "De Leopard".
