Help with pedal order

josh

Hi guys i am planing this pedalboard & i don't know the order that the pedals must be in.
Here is the list of pedals: Ernie Ball VP JR Volume Pedal
EHX Nano Small Stone Phase Shifter
MXR GT-OD Overdrive Pedal
Orange Amp Footswitch
Korg Pitchblack Chromatic Tuner

tuner first I would beleive..... then volume pedal....... then small stone....... the Overdrive,

The small stone and Overdrive are switchable dependant on what you prefer, as well as the tuner and volume pedal, howver I stand corrected to say the tuner and volume pedals being switched is OK........ Just be sure to have Volume before other effects. and tuner before other effects like phaser and od

Guitar - Tuner - OD - Phaser - Volume - Amp

* As Mika mentions, the phaser and OD can be swapped. I prefer having a Small Stone after the overdrive, but your tastes may vary.
* The amp footswitch isn't in the effect chain, so just position it wherever you want.
* The volume could come at the beginning of the chain, but then it controls amount of overdrive too. At the end lets you control pedal noise between songs.

+1 to Alan's approach......

Another option is if the volume pedal has a tuner out, the tuner can go there and then stays out of the signal path. (although the Pitchblack is a true bypass if memory serves me correctly)

AlanRatcliffe

Yes - the Pitch Black is true bypass so it can go in the chain - which also means you can make use of the mute function. If you hang it off the volume pedal, it comes in at the end of the chain (or near it if you have reverb or delay), so you have to bypass all the effects in front of it to use it.

Hey Alan, I see you rather wise with regards to pedal placements. I agree 100% with you suggestions for Josh.
My question however is, how do you arrange pedals if for example you have 3 different types of distortions. Ive always learned that gain driven pedals come first and then the modulated pedals which begs another question.

So my distortion pedals are: MXR Crunchbox (main dist), BOSS FZ-2 [Fuzz] and the MT-2 (which I use mainly as a gain boost), how would you arrange these?
and then, my modulated pedals are the BOSS DD-3 and the CE-2 which one before which, in your opinion?

Currently my setup is as follows:

Guitar > Korg Tuner > MXR Crunchbox > Metal Zone > Fuzz > Delay > Chorus > AMP

I know I have a lot of BOSS pedals, but these things were second hand, thus I knew they were reliable.. they are tanks after all 8)

When it comes to multiple drives, you have to sit and test, swapping them around until you find what works best for you with those specific pedals. No right or wrong... Although - I'd probably start with the arrangement you have already: Overdrive - Distortion - Fuzz.

I would swap the reverb and delay around. Modulation usually goes before time-based.
