Viccy, there's an interesting CNBC doccie i saw yesterday about McD's. Quite interesting (and it wasn't a marketing gimmick sorta doccie).
The truth is McD's may not exactly be trying to cash in on the health food market. I think it'd be more of a natural progression for them as people are more health conscious now.
And you're right on the second thing. There is.

Yep, real sex symbols, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Johnny Cash, Mark Knopfler, Martin Taylor, Doyle Dykes, etc. I think that the less of a musician you are are, the more you have to compensate.

I find acoustic musicians either go for the hippie sort of look, or the elegant for more classical types. I think of Ana Vidovic but then on some research I find more female string quartets in very small outfits...

Then again, I can't stand string quartets, they always play the same music over and over again, they need another gimmick to make me put up with them.

You know, I rarely take relationship advice from people I know well, so I'll hold on the advice from a porn actor.

What really bugs me is the lack of creativity. They tried to dress up the same act as an "artistic expression", and that offends me. Who knows, it may or may not be. I am willing to admit I'm wrong, but after seeing a Lady Gaga video I have to watch some Hard Gay to bring back the happy thoughts.

I'm with Viccy in the sense that, yes, those men were all sex symbols. But they produced music that was really worth selling - with sex or without it. When the sex is the product it's not the same story.

Btw, I've met a few women who thought Bob Dylan was freakin' smokin'. Not sure about Willie Nelson though ?

I had a look at "speechless" and at the initial interview that put me off her so much in the first place, and my opinion has changed a little.

I still maintain that there is some deliberate misinformation and confusion about who actually designs her outfits, and in the interview I saw she was very evasive when asked which designs were actually hers. From what she said it sounds like sometimes she comes up with an idea which other people have to create. I just felt a bit annoyed that the people who are really responsible for her image don't get recognition. That kind of work takes a lot of skill. I honestly wouldn't have expected her to do the work that has taken some designers years of practice to create. And to her credit she seemed embarrased when asked the question, because she clearly does respect the people who are actually responsible for her image.

I take artistry quite seriously as you may have noticed, and I definitely think sex comes into our psyce as much as any other aspect of life and deserves a place in art/ comedy/ music, but what I see in pop music videos is a colossal waste of resources, because it's no longer about making a connection, but making a sale using the same old tired booty shake routine like an Omo Micro Supper Bubbles With Silver Ions advert. So that was where the contradiction came for me. Her image is supposed to say 'I don't give a damn, I'm here and I rule", but what actualy is being said is "I so badly need to make money, so I won't dare do something you're not absolutely familiar with". I thought that her image worked as a concept, but she isn't talented enough to actually engage people on any level other than sex.

So to sumarise, I initially thought Lady Gaga was an artistic freeloder who took credit for other people's work, while not contributing much in the way of composition and interperatation. She also contradicted and sullied her overall image of creative freedom by doing ridiculous "music video commercials". Oh, on top of that the music videos I saw had an overall theme of self destruction, very depressing.

When I listened to her live performance "speechless", I realised she does have the ability to express herself beyond sex appeal. And she deserves to wear the clothes that were clearly designed for that kind of performance. So what I'm saying is that her ability to be a chameleon negates what preconcieved ideas I have about "cheerleaders on autotune". I just realy hope she doesn't do a re-born new- age goth phase like Madonna.

The problem for me in this type of argument is that it's not an either or. Lady Gaga is not being hyped at ANYBODY's expense. There's plenty of money to go around. Despite what we would like to believe, music companies do not determine personal taste over any type of long term. Especially in the age of 100,000 songs on an ipod, most unpaid for.
And this my friends is what we are too afraid to say 'cause it really sucks. Most people don't care about, appreciate or have the vaguest sense of discernment with regard to music. And it's not the fault of corporations.

Yes, unfortunately I fall into the class of fanatical musician. I've built my life so far on what I've been able to accomplish with art and music. I didn't have the nice cusion of attending tertiary education first, I just took what I knew and applied it. I was willing to be poor for a really long time if it meant that I'd get really good at what I do. So, I understand I feel more strongly about art than other people. My life after school has depended on it till now. Sure that kind of sucks in a world where people don't realy care, but I see it as a success if I can express myself to the best of my ability.
