guitar input jack

my one guitar has gone really quiet .. i checked the wiring an all looks fine , i suspect it is the jack that has gone faulty , is this possible?

EZ check: plug a lead into the guitar and measure the resistance from the other end of the lead while the volume is closed (zero). If resistance is more than, say, 100 ohms the problem is between your jack and the volume knobbie.

It's possible it's the jack worn out, but wiggling the plug will usually give you an intermittent signal if that's the case. If it turns, the wires could be broken off. Could also be the selector switch, or a pot, either of which is common. Either way, make sure and replace.

Thanks , checked all ok , then started playing around with the volume pot and found the problem , if i push the volume knob around it loses sound so something in the pot is not making a good connection .... ☹

time to get another ..

The thing with guitars is that they say they're ok. It means they think you're a dick if you can't figure out what's wrong. You gotta find some way of figuring out what might have p'd them off and make amends. Possibly with a present or some kind of sign of your true feelings.

Wait. Am I thinking about guitars or something else?

Thanks for all the guidance on this one ... turned out to be crappy soldering on my part but i replaced the volume pot as a matter of course anyway.

of course when i went to buy a vol pot i ended up not only with as vol pot but a lefty MIM strat as well, i really hate music stores.

Alan , i bought yr book about 9 months ago , read it and still frequently use it as a reference work ,its a most excellent book and i was lucky to get a hard cover at estorils ... mebbe time for a re print? ?

Not up to me. They haven't told me they are not reprinting it yet, but I doubt they will though... Especially as I'm now signed to (and in dispute with) a US publisher. Rights revert to me in a couple of years, so I may go eBook via Amazon when that happens.
