Right, so I decided that after 14 years of playing, it's time for me to record something of mine. Hooked up into my zoom g2.1u and hooked that up to my lappy via usb.
Result? It records, but that's about it.
Signal levels seem fine on the monitor, but upon playback, volume is distinctly lacking and I get a lot of clipping(strange)
I tried RTFM, but couldn't find anything translated properly from Chinese and ended up packing Isabela away.
*sigh
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

My first guess would be a problem with different bitrates and resolution. What this means is that if your Zoom puts out 16 bit 44.1 KHz (or whatever), you may have to set Cubase to record at the same bitrate and resolution. Otherwise a conversion takes place somewhere (I'm not sure where, but I suspect it's a Windows thing) and that conversion is very rough.
I had a similar problem when I first connected the optical digital out from my Guitar Rig laptop (16 bit 44.1 KHz) to the input on my desktop (24 bit 44.1 KHz). As soon as I set the rates to the same, the problem went away. I can't say what yours are set to, so you'll have to do a bit of investigating.
Also, try a different USB port on your laptop - not all are created equal. Often any USB ports at the front of the laptop are running off a different and discrete controller which is not integrated into the motherboard chipset. The integrated controllers usually work better.

That makes a lot of sense. I'll try it out tonight.
Thanks Alan
