Yeah Hey Joe was originally a traditional country ballad. What is intriguing how much of Hendrix phrasing and style has mid western country influences a good example is "The Wind Cries Mary"

Not much like the Hendrix version. ? Hey Joe was around a while before Hendrix recorded it (I think his version was inspired by a Tim McGraw version).

He's clearly very good. Been trying to play slide guitar with my Regal dobro but the guitar on the lap position is so unfamiliar, I have to focus on keeping my elbows against my side and not like chicken wings....the same thing happens when I'm eating, I'm told. ?

Is it just that all bluegrass slide dobro sounds the same to me, or is that the same guy from Union Station? I'm guessing the former.

He's the guy from Union Station. Jerry Douglas.

I know what you're saying. I am somewhat of a fan of Douglas, but you do hear his sound a lot (or he guests on every bluegrass record that gets cut). Also the Dobro tends to sound like the Dobro.

I've been listening to Geoff Muldaur's Mississippi Sheiks. The dobro/steel player on that album is Cindy Cashdollar who is just fab. There's Geoff Lang - but he's not really a bluegrass player. Bob Brozman ditto - he's got blues, Hawaiian and all sorts of stuff going on.

That set was a sort of last minute thing and maybe not that well rehearsed. It happened at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow a couple of years ago when somebody pulled out at very short notice and so Douglas and Tim O'Brien (playing mandolin in this clip) quickly worked up a set of Hendrix songs.

You're reading something in there Bob. I litterally don't know any other bluegrass dobro players and he sounded so similar to the guy in Union Station that I wondered whether it was the same guy, or whether bluegrass slide dobro just sounds like that - hence the similarity to Union Station. I'm rather surprised that it was, in fact, the same guy. Guess he's very distinctive.

He is. He's also one of those guys who gets lots of session work (he's been repeatedly voted, by whoever votes for these things, as the most valuable player in Nashville) and so if you listen to bluegrass or newgrass or anything even close he's very hard to avoid. I think he gets copied a lot as well. I remember times when it seemed that every second song I heard on the radio the guitarist was trying to be Mark Knopfler. Larry Carlton was similarly popular for a while. It's never the fault of the originator of the sound.

He actually has a pretty wide range (Scottish and Irish folk, world music, even bebop on occasions) but I think a lot of the time he gets hired to play a certain style. However he does always tend to sound like himself - which is, I guess, unavoidable. My wife bought me a Tim O'Brien album for Xmas a couple of years ago. I had it on in the car and one particular track started and I shouted "theeeeeeres' Jerry". You can hear him a mile off.
