Guitar solos that touch your soul...

I dont know if anyone else has these moments. I was listening to Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven (From 'The song remains the same") , and yes I know it has become the cheesy song that guitarists in the 70's always played in guitar shops!(remember 'Wayne's World" ?) But Jimmy Page's Solo always pushes one of my buttons. I dont know which button it is, but it's almost a goosebumpy, spiritual thing that kind of goes beyond technique, ability etc. I know that Jimmy isn't the best out there but that solo, the way that he builds it right up to the climax with all the tensions and emotions effects me every single time. Anyone else experience this , or do I need help?

All of George Lynch's solos touched my soul. ALL OF THEM.

Sting - Fragile... gets right up there... no idea why.

Another solo that does that is Hendrix's All along the watchtower... man... gooseflesh galore.

Seventhson

I would have to say my fav solo is The Eagles hotel California
I just love it makes me feel good 8)

And I do like allot of Iron maidens solo's like the one from Phantom of the Opera.

The Vibrators - Baby Baby.

Ray

And Sloe Gin on Tim Curry's Read My Lips - not the Bonamassa album which is also good though.

Pearl Jam - Alive. There is just something about it that does it for me, not the most technical, but to me its awesome!

Some really great ones here already. Slash's second solo in November rain and near the end in Paradise City when he kicks it up a gear - Epic! Also, when The Darkness' Justin Hawkins shouts Geetar! before launching into his solo on I Believe In Thing Called Love always gets me smiling. ?

I played No Quarter (same album) over and over a million times or more and still get goose bumps whenever I hear that solo by Jimmy Page. :yup:

I reckon the most important solo to touch your soul is the one you play.
If and when I ever don't connect with my soul then it's time to give up playing.

The lil solo at 5:34 on "The reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" power stuff

The solo that always gives me chills, and is probably my all time favourite solo, is the solo in Blackbird by Alter Bridge. Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti came up with a gem in that one. For me its the perfect combination of shred and feeling.

I have a suggestion.

Rather than talk about the best guitar solos to touch your soul in general why not start a thread about the "Best" or "Most Fiery" or "Best Soul Touching" guitar solos by South African guitarists from the 1960's to the present exclusively, and then keep it in a place on the guitar forum where everyone can check it out. I'm specifically talking about guitar solos, not just songs with nice guitar playing in it. Just like in the UK and US, where they have everyone from Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen to George Benson, Richie Blackmore and Joe Satriani, to name but a tiny percentage of celebrated guitarists.

Why not list and celebrate South African guitarists who have recorded great guitar solo's permanently on this forum. Something like a "Hall of Fame" kinda thing.

This way South African guitarists, young and old, will be able to discover guitarists that they otherwise would never have heard of. I mean I've never heard of the band Factory or the guitarist Andre Meyer. It was only after someone suggested it on this thread and added a link that I went to myspace and listened to it. And like others have said here, the sound is old and some of the music is lame, but there is incredible guitar playing and solo's throughout and I have never heard another local guitarist do a solo like the one on Let it Rain or have such a killer tone, even if it was done 25 years ago.

What do you think?

Good idea kp247... cos I don't know any local guys either. Apart from Rabin... no one else. I heard there's a local cat called Arjun who plays rather well... but I don't know. With a name like that it'll be hard to tell... sounds like he would kick my butt if I looked at him funny...

So yeah... go for it. But I don't know if a Hall of Fame will be cool... it could be a nice homage to some... I dunno... maybe I need more coffee to see the bright side of it.

? Lol. Look at me funny and i'll gouge your eyes out with my Ibanez. Comprendez?

But Evo, you're a pretty tasteful player if i may say so.

Forgot to add in my initial post that "Declan" from Jeff Beck's Who else album kills me everytime i hear it.
I'd say it was my favourite piece of guitar music, if it weren't for that little slide and wah bit in All along the watchtower (not to mention the rhythmic embellishments JH does).

As Bob has jumped in with Gilmour who is brilliant, one of my favourite solos is Deep Purple, When a blind man cries.
