Best value "cheap" electric for future upgrades ?

Looking to help a youngster with a cheapish (approx R3k) electric which we can upgrade over time as he improves ?

What cheapish electric is the best value with this in mind. So far looking at Cort M200 but what else?

Look for a good 2nd hand instrument. You might find a guitar that needs rather less done for the same amount of money.

Consider employing what experts are now calling "the Witherkay Method" and see what's lurking in the pawn shops.

If you wonder over to the classifieds here you may find an oke selling a hollowbody Ibanez. You may find that he is open to a reasonable offer. You may even find that he has an Ibanez SAS32FM that he may sell for 3G's as well. The Cort is good I think Wizard has one so ask him what he thinks last I saw he was quite excited with it.

I'm sure it will be mentioned by many others, but the Yamaha Pacifica 112 goes a long way.

I do love my M200.
I'll also find out this week how well it upgrades with new pickups ?
Remember though I'm new to guitar and this is a new toy for me ... so get a more experienced opinion from the regular masters on the forum.

There's one 2nd hand on gumtree for R 2,000.

I agree with Bob, look out for a second hand one. I got my Mexi strat, which is in EXCELLENT condition, no a scratch on it for R3000 with a hard case.. I know that was super cheap, but still possible. There was a cort KX custom for R2800 down the road from me on junkmail, which is a lot better than a M200.

A Yamaha Pacifica is a great guitar! There is actually one in a pawnshop here for R1800, could do with a bit of a clean and some new strings, but it's a good guitar.

So yeah, second hand guitars will give you better bang for your buck, if you're willing to go that route! ?

Secondhand is always the best option as long as you know what you are looking for and buying on the Forum, while it doesn't give you any guarantees, is likely buying from someone you sort of "know".

Nothing wrong with the M200, although the bolt on neck and all mahogany body take it away from the Les Paulish ideal. I'm not sure about the price, but the M520 is a better bet if the budget can stretch that far - Maple cap, set neck, TonePros licensed bridge and tailpiece. Guitarist Magazine gave it their buyer's award a couple of years ago.

On the Strattier side of things, the Cort G260 is still my recommendation, but the G200 is great on the cheaper side.

BTW - Bothner's Plumstead's Birthday sale is coming up in a few days time (Thursday to Sunday) - it's usually well worth a look. No details yet, and they often don't give details other than "everything on special", but If I get solid prices, I'll post 'em.

You can also look at a second hand Epiphone, second hand LTD, for the LP shape.
Look at SX and Squire (even MIM and MIJ Fender) for Strat or Tele shapes.

I haven't played many, but they seemed inconsistent - some were nice, others were iffy. Same with the Z44 and Z42.
