Starting a guitar build

I'm really interested in building a guitar. Mostly for the experience. I was wondering though, how would one start such a project. I mean, I know there are places like stewmac (Which could keep me online for days) but something tells me there has to be a slightly cheaper way to build your first guitar. Is there? What would that be?

Water based. Is that a good choice? And I don't have a spray gun so it will be can. Where can I get hold of that???

If the green is sprayed over the original finish, why not just polish it off with a rubbing compound? That's the easiest thing to do.

According to the guy that did it, he sanded down the original finish in the areas that he was going to paint so that the paint would stick. And then he masked it of and painted...

Might still be do-able. If he just roughed up the surface for adhesion, there's a good chance that there's still enough original finish underneath to buff up. Those original finishes tend to be thick.

I still want to refinish it though. Just to get some practise.
