it should be recognised that the world has changed ... recognising this and making a plan around it is what is needed. Being all sanctimonious aint going to alter that fact.
Somebody once opined in the House Of Lords that the so-called "new morality" is just the old immorality condoned. Things change, yes, but they don't always change for the better and we should still be exercising some responsibility for our actions.
It's not sanctimonious to observe that file downloading amounts to people giving away what is not theirs in the first place.
What I find is missing in all this discussion about changed models is what exactly the new model is. Things have not changed to the extent that it costs money to make an album, to manufacture the CDs and to get the thing into the shops. It's still about rands and cents - artists need to earn money, or have wealthy patrons.
possibly this exposure this artist is getting would not of been gotten otherwise and her next album may go viral because of this exposure.
I think you need to consider the whole arc of events here. The reality is that she is in hock on her current album. Now she may be getting exposure but that's not going to pay the bills she has to settle in this world and in this time. Unless she can do that she may not be able to make another album. She may be getting exposure, but that's not paying the bills.
hands up who has never pirated or copied something illegally.
My hand isn't up. But that doesn't mean that I shouldn't reconsider my position and it doesn't make anything right.
