One of my long-time favs....Jethro Tull's Teacher Listen to that flute, guitar work and off-beat ! WOW ! ? Very difficult to do live.

PS: Pegg came into Fairport as the replacement for founder Ashley Hutchings. Hutchings left Fairport to form Steeleye Span, so the relationships are quite complex. Pegg has also done a lot of session work (especially as a rhythm section for hire with Dave Mattacks) and he's played with so many people that Fairport fans talk about "Pegg numbers", a sort of degrees of separation.

He's also got links back to Led Zeppelin or at least John Bonham, and he was right in the thick of the folk music scene for a while with Ian and Lorna Campbell (whose sons are Robin and Ali Campbell of UB40 fame).

He plays great mandolin.

He has kissed my wife. Danny Thompson just blew her a kiss, but Pegg actually planted one on her.

PS: How could I forget mentioning that haunting Hammond organ in Teacher...?

Roots to Branches is a stunning album too - full of Arabic influences. Actually, I like most of their output - I love Passion Play, which is not many like. Aqualung is not my favourite, although it has a few moments and I don't listen to Too Old To Rock and Roll very often.

So yeah... you might have guessed by now that they are one of my all time favourite bands. Up there with Frank Zappa, King Crimson & Pink Floyd. ?

I thought IA's flute was quite fine. Younger I had a bunch of their albums and for me Aqualung is my pick. Also liked the one with the newspaper album cover.

He's pretty unique as a flautist and I always regarded him as foremost in the "overblown rock flute" genre. ? He's also a damn fine songwriter and a showman par excellance. Probably the best live act I've ever seen.

He struggles with his singing now though. According to Simon "Fuzzy" Ratcliffe (no relation), the embouchure formed by playing flute is completely different to that formed by a singer, so by doing both, IA was destined to do damage that would affect one or the other.

By which I assume you mean a technique rather than a pretentious attitude. I have heard other players who have used that very breathy sound where it SOUNDS like they're blowing into the thing. The guys that come to mind are Tijs van Leer out of Focus and Joe Vitale (more famous as a drummer, but can also blow a scarily Anderson-esque flute). Hmmm.... maybe the guy from Men At Work as well. Oh... and locally there was Keith Berel from Flash Harry. Blimey! There's a whole SCHOOL of rock flute here. I think Anderson was probably the originator of that sound. I think Johnny Clegg's band had a bit of that flute sound going as well, but then it seemed to me that Johnny Clegg had been paying a lot of attention to Jethro Tull records.
