  • Please help: Pickup wire resonating in body causing a buzzing noise

Hi all

I play an acoustic-electric Yamaha FX370C. While playing certain notes (for example 1te fret on B string / C) the wiring of the pickup (I assume) is resonating within the body of the guitar. If I gently tug/move the wires it goes away briefly. How can I fix this problem???

Pickup: System58 (1-way preamp with piezo, 3-band EQ)

Thanks

Herman

Are you sure that it's the wiring? Do you have to slacken off the strings to get at that wiring? If so then it could be that you are temporarily relocating something else whilst you relocate that wiring.

One of my guitars has a loose pickup wire. This rattles and annoys (if I shake the instrument around), but it's not resonant at a certain note and most of the time it's no problem at all.

Also you mention "wires" plural. There's likely to be more than one. There will be pickup to controls, controls to output, maybe more. So you need to figure out exactly what is buzzing here.

You're in Jo'burg. If in doubt have a chat with the repair guys at Andy McGibbon's or at Music Connection.
I can get to the strings without having to slack the strings. Shaking the guitar also works. I was hoping that I can fix this problem myself. Will do a bit more investigating before taking it in. Thanks for the feedback.
I have the same problem with my tak on certain notes. When I wiggle the preamp around by sticking my fingers in the soundhole and shaking the wires it goes away for a while. It started after a few weeks of taking the guitar around in my car to various places. A car is a dangerous place for musical instruments.

I haven't had time to find a solution yet, but I assume that taking everything apart and putting it back together should be enough to get a snug fit again.
I think it will work, taking everything apart and refitting it. How would I refit the wiring to the inside of the guitar, making it nice and snugg to take away the buzzing, without damaging the wood???
Chewing gum. Stay away from the top 8)
Pickup wires rarely cause buzzing, but if it is, then make sure that the wire hasn't come loose from a tiedown. Try bundling wires with a small cable tie. Then if it persists, check the braces on the top.
