Wah pedals

Howzit Howzit,

I'm just starting to put some cash together..... (It's not much) and I really want a Wah Pedal. I've never played with one but my ultimate guitaring hero, Mark Tremonti, Uses a signature one and I love that sound! If anyone can point me in the right direction or give me some tips I will be eternally greatful.........

Since you don't quite know what you are after, I would get a second hand crybaby. Then, when you are used to it you will be able to see if you want a more butter type tone or whatever! Then look at the others like the weeping demon or the buddah. The quality wah's are expensive and you will waste money buying them since they are (usually) better suited to a specific playing style or gain setting, unless you know what you are after.

They are pretty much the staple diet, the mashed potatoes of wah's. Nothing special really, but easy to get a good sound from them and not too expensive. You can also mod them to get almost whatever sound you want AFAIK. Someone like matta or other members on the forum could do the mods for you.

Things to look out for is the switch that turns them on/off tends to go after a while, requiring you to stamp down pretty bloody hard before it clicks on/off. Other than that I have not heard of other major problems?

(I'm no expert on effects, I am sure other members will come comment too! ? )

+1 on most of Aja's comments. The main thing to keep in mind is that the footwork is more important than the specifics of the wah. You can change the caps/resistors far more easily than you can get good feel in the control of the thing. So my advice to you would be to get a second hand Crybaby since you can always sell it at little loss. Start playing and find out.

Try to get something that has Fasel inductors in it. it should say on the box - crybaby examples are the Crybaby classic, 535Q and most the signature ones. Just sound alot better imho. A little bit more expensice but worth it.

I was also in the same boat a while ago, I went to music connection to try out a couple
I ended up getting the CAE wah - made by Custom Audio Electronics (Bob Bradshaw) with conjuction with crybaby/dunlop.
It is pretty awesome, it has 2 fasels in it each with a different voicing/sound and a kickswitch to switch between the 2. It also has a built in MXR signal/gain booster.
