Pick ups mounted at angles - doff question maybe

I have one of those Ibby LP Professionals (big Maxon pickup's) both are mounted at an angle to the strings (not 90deg) , I am looking at replacing these with P90's. (which will sit in the angled routing)

My question is, why are some Strat's and Tele's pickups mounted at angle and other not ?

Are there Pros and Cons in doing so. ?

The last question is there anyone who rewires/makes pick-ups in SA ?

Tone - the closer to the bridge the tighter the sound and brighter the tone and the further away the fatter the tone. With a Strat/Tele, Leo wanted a really bright sound from the treble strings, because that was in fashion when he invented the two and was a major selling point for Rock 'n Roll and Country players. Sometimes a pickup will be reverse slanted to get a tighter response on the bass strings (I like a reverse slant on a brighter Strat bridge p/up).

Eddie van Halen mounted the humbucker at an angle in his "Frankenstrat" to get the polepieces to line up (Gibson string spacing is narrower than Fender).

That's where something inexpensive like the Toneriders come in handy.

BTW - You asked if there was anyone winding locally. There may be someone doing it on the quiet, but not that I know of. I considered getting into it briefly, but ultimately I don't think there is enough of a market locally.

I am building a LP Jr and have already bought one Gibson and one Seymour Duncan P90 for it. It's just that I will probably not finish the guitar for another year so you might borrow the pups in the meantime... Make me a swap offer and I'll swap you back as soon as the guit's finished ?

sounds like a plan, hows about my first born ( 6 years old, dosent takeup much space and does not eat much) ?

Because of the size and shape of the current pup, I am trying to get the P90 to fit inside the existing pickup cover, a single like a tele pup does

the trick with room to spare, but I can't have that in a LP or could I

seen and heard Strats with Tele's in'em with and without theh base plate ......sound like a Strat/Tele hybrid'ish not bad
