I don't think there's anything stopping people from voting for 2 beginner category players, or 2 advanced, rather than splitting their vote between the two.

Thanks ? I didn't think it felt very CSNY to me, though with that tuning and the very specific way it makes the guitar ring... I was trying to work in a bit of folk dance in towards the end. A lot of folk musics incorporate a drone.

To me it did... more Young than the whole shebang... but thats just what I picked up... been a while since i listened to either... but nonetheless, it was nicely done Bob ?

Let's say, hypothetically, that some doofus was entered in one category, attracted votes, then demanded to be moved to another. Wouldn't that skew things a tad?

But it's also clear that not all voters exercised their right to cast two votes.

@ Bob - When you pointed out that you were in the wrong category you already had one vote as an advanced so to change your category would be rubbishing that vote. By the time Alan changed you (his such a meddlesome fellow) you must have had 2 advanced votes that's why the stats are not quite right. Since you have been demoted to beginner you have managed to garner 2 more votes. I think you may have done better to stay in the advanced group because I think you could have taken Alan out and given him a hiding but Warren... well that's a different kettle of fish ? ?

Whatever. But simple arithmetic tells us that not all voters voted twice

Members do not have to exercise both there votes or even vote at all What we tequire is that members do not vote twice in the same category. I can usually tell when this happens because the numbers of votes for the category exceeds the total number of votes. I then use my special statistical powers to find out who did the dastardly deed and force them to listen to sokkies treffers for a few hours

Firstly, well done everyone - a great standard of entries. Some of you in the beginner's category could easily have competed in advanced.

@Squonk: Wonderful entry with a nice feel - the bass drone kept me guessing. A little bit of clipping here and there though.

@CDee: Dare I say it reminded me of Collective Soul? The piezos added a nice tonality. The drums sounded a bit iffy though and jumped out way too loud in one spot (a clip accidentally pasted over the same place twice?).

@EZ: I love the mellow feel. Evo said it best: sombreness

@MikeM: Love the open string chug that brings the altered tuning home.

@Warren: Excellent and my favourite overall - IMO you could have won the advanced with this. Beautiful piece with nice melodic ideas and dynamics, marred only by a few recording and production mistakes.

@Bob: Great piece, nice tuning and great tone. Also deserving of the advanced category.

Not as such, but tuning the 2nd and 3rd to the same note evinces some 12-string character.

Thanks very much Alan. ? You know, to even get a single vote in such company was great for me, so I'm very chuffed!

Production-wise: yes, you can hear a nasty little "pop" just before the strummed chords begin, which was the result of me chopping a clip too short by accident (and having no backup). I also re-recorded certain bits of the lead where I was unhappy (which meant LOTS of re-takes ?) and unfortunately you can hear it sort of "stop" (like the reverb "switches off") where there is a gap here and there, again mostly in the bit just before the strummed chords. I'm hoping some more practice with these things will smooth that stuff out.

On the categories: I don't consider myself a very advanced guitarist, so thought I'd play things safe and go for the beginner's category ? Happy to switch to advanced going forward. Are there any guidelines as to what constitutes beginner / advanced?

Not many guidelines, but if you are winning the B section it's a sure sign that you should move up to A.

You cant really put it down to playing years, I know some guys who have been playing for thirty years and wouldn't be able to produce your entry Warren!

Must say, it took me an entire day just fiddling around with Line6's Gearbox and my Takamine to get an acoustic sound I was OK with. Funnily enough, I used Alan's own recommended EQ settings for piezo PUPs as a basis, which I found (completely by co-incidence) via Google.

My fingers have taken a real beating though. I seriously struggle with my Tak at the moment, and desperately need to have it set up properly. Other than that I'm loving it muchly ?

Geeeee wizzzz job well done guys! I must find a way to record onto my laptop so that I can join in the fun and games! What is a cheap way to do this??

There are cheap options available. For a laptop you can buy an external sound card(Audio interface card).
There is a range of them starting from about R500 .
I bought the cheapest of them, a Behringer UCA 202 which works quite well.
The Line6 Pod Studio's are also reasonable.
Behringer also does Guitar link which comes with a snippet of Guitar Rig

Edirol, M-Audio etc etc.
Some effects pedals also act as an Audi Interface, The Zoom G2, A2 and some Digitech Pedals.

Squonk makes good suggestions. Try and make sure that whatever audio interface you buy is ASIO compliant, which will present you with more options when using the various Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) packages out there.

Some sound cards can mix Mic inputs with your regular guitar inputs too, which is nice for rounding out the sound of an acoustic with a piezo-pickup (or so I imagine, my current device only has one jack).

As a suggestion, make sure you speak to the sound recording guys at the various guitar shops. I found many of the actual guitar sales-people were not particularly well versed in this area, giving either no advice or poor advice.

Thanx for the replies. I remember when I had a BossME20 when I started playing back in the day I use to out that into my PC's mic jack and recorded some stuff, but I'm sure I will need software to go with the sound card? Is it necessary to buy pro-tools or something similar? Or is that mostly for mixing different tracks? I would actually like to mic my amp up and record like that, or is this not practical?
