Hmm.. That makes sense.. So.. What if I don't have a context in which this chord fits? ?
After watching that dvd, I'm really keen on working on my chords.. I know the main chords, but really want to delve into these kinds of D 11/E, etc..
How does one go about add these kinds of chords into chord sequences? Even chords like Pete put up there, G6, to Cmaj7.
Where would i start in trying to add in augmented chords, diminished chords, and other chords with 6's, 11's added to them?
Forgive the double post...
You could start adding them to your progressions in a way that makes you play the melody through your chords. Remember that a 6 chord can also be a substitute for the 7. 11ths are tricky creatures in that they sound best over a V chord... unless you use the #11 in a IV chord. The I chord with an 11 sounds awkward.
Your augmented chords would be over your V, unless you are really adventurous in making a cycle of V's. Your diminished chords would be at your vii... but it could also be used as an approach chord...ie: the next chord is major either a half step above or below. So in using it as an approach a half step above the next chord could make it a bii. Substitution theory and tritone theory would help you out on that. Coltrane would be a good guide to learning that.
