Hey everyone.

Has anyone got an idea where I can get DECENT guitar and microphone cable in Cape Town without breaking the bank? I've got a whole bunch of connectors lying around and I want to make some good quality cables.

I'm also looking for a decent stereo insert cable. (The ones with Stereo jack on the one side and 2 mono jacks on the other). I need one now because of the whole piezo thing. I tried some local shops but nothing. Which ones are the best or is it better make it up from quality parts?

I reckon get the parts and have them made up. I've tried out different cables over the years and the ones that I've made or had made up seem to last a bit longer. I'm going to see if Matta can make some up for me. Apparently the cables that he made for Inflames are pretty sweet. I haven't dealt with him yet but I'm pretty sure he would be willing to post em up to you. Best thing i suppose is to get hold of him and see ?

Wicked new Parker BTW. Dig the maple neck and the natural wood finish.

Hey Guys,

I've had a couple PM's, I have no secrets, so if you want to know I use Ampehnol Connectors and Mogami Cabling, both industry standards and available locally. I'm also an agent for Wild & Marr, so have access to Klotz and Neutrik, though I still believe the Ampehnol and Mogami are a better option. If you are in CPT you can order from me, I normally keep a few meters on hand of the top mic and instrument cables and jacks/XLR's etc, if on Joburg buy from the agent, Design by Max.

My prices are higher because I need to deal with shipping/freight issues and ordering etc, but not much more than Max's, about 15% more, to cover my aforementioned costs, I make my money on the labour of building up custom cables.

I will ship them national wide and have been building custom electronics for several years, I've built THOUSANDS of cables, including wiring up entire studios and touch wood have NEVER had a cable break or be returned for faulty workmanship, so while I'll gladly sell you the parts, it might be more cost effective to have me make them up as well.

BTW Design by Max has closed down and is no longer selling cables and parts.

However....if anybody needs anything here in Jozi just PM me and I'll put it together for you.....I use Klotz/Neutrik and have no problems at all.

Here is a first for me..... ?...after 20 years of use the stereo jack (Neutrik) on my Beyerdynamic Headphones is now getting a bit unreliable and needs to be replaced....I've worn off all the chrome finish...... ?

I'm still using some Neutrik jacks I bought 15 years ago. Hard to go wrong with Mogami or Canare cable, although I've heard good things about the Klotz too.

Sorry, but please don't spread rumours!

It is a complete lie and fabrication, several people have said this and it not helping Max at all, who has been very good to me over the years. I'm about to place a substantial order with him, yes there was a time when he was out of stock of some connectors (namely the 90 degree TS jacks), but hardly out of business or closing down! That rumour could easily have been validated by calling him, as I did.

I still believe the Amphenol's are better, see the below pic. Firstly the Neutrik is alot larger making it harder to work with on large pedal boards, secondly the top is PLASTIC not die cast aluminum is the Amphenol, which is also gold plated over the nickel Neutrik, then there is the price... FULL RETAIL on the Neutrik is R52.44 inc VAT, the same Ampehnol is R14.50 inc VAT... now times that by 26 for the pedal board I'm wiring and it is a substantial saving!

Granted Neutrik have now 'copied' a similar connector in the way of the NP2RX, which retails for R45.00 inc VAT from RS.

What I find weird is the HUGE price discrepancy, in the US/Europe Amphenol and Neutrik go head to head on pricing, in some case Neutrik being the cheaper alternative ???

An aside, Amphenol was also founding in 1932, designing the worlds first 'Tube Socket' and have for years paved the way for interconnects in various industries like Aviation, Cellular Technologies and the Medical fields.

Mogami is superior cable to Klotz, just LISTEN to it, Mogami and Canare are a league of there own and I'll quite comfortable interchange them, and will take them over Klotz (it isn't bad, just not as good), Proel etc, the Mogami 2524, their BEST instrument cable is only +- R15 a meter, I think cheap Proel is around R11,00 a meter from music stores and a WAY inferior cable!

Thanks Matt! Good to get a knowledgeable opinion on the Klotz cables. I've used Belden before too, which was great.

I've only used the straight Neutrik jacks and the big angled models (which are good, but way too large to use in most situations). The Amphenol certainly look like the way to go for angled.

Apologies there Matt if I bent your nose a little out of joint..... ?....... I was only going on what I had heard in the Pro Audio Industry......I personally have very little dealings with Max directly myself....If what you say is true (which I accept as true) then I withdraw my comment.

Regarding the Amphenol / Neutrik issue....I believe both connectors are of the top order.....for me personally I have used Neutriks longer and have great faith in them.

Interestingly enough as I mentioned in another thread, I have had to replace a number of Amphenol connectors recently at our church as they had become very tarnished...I do believe though that they were the lower range ones though so no indictment against Amphenol.

I do agree however that the Neutriks are expensive and maybe a little overpriced. I also do not generally buy connectors from RS as the agents are usually more cost effective.
