Hi All

A family member of mine was in a band in the 60's/70's and has given me his Laney Bass 100 Cab from that same era. Now the cab is really heavy and it is in Natal so I am going to just get the speakers removed and send them to me here in the Cape.

The speakers are Celestion G15C (15" ceramic?). Anyone have any experience with the sound. I am going to use them for guitar not bass. As far as I know they were used in the Laney Bass Cabs as well as some Gibson Mercury guitar amps.

Also, if they need to be serviced does anyone know if it is possible and where in the cape I can have it done.

If it's a spider frame GC15C like this one, it is a very rare speaker that was manufactured in the 60s and 70s at Celestion's Thames Ditton plant. I could not find any other info. I know a really good speaker repair guy in CT. PM me and I'll send you his details.

They are indeed the spider frame 15" but as you can see from the pictures they will need some work done on the cones.
Another really odd thing is that one speaker is rated at 50watts 16ohm which is normal spec, then the other looks like it had an extra 0 stamped on it to read 500watts and someone stuck a round sticker with 8 printed on it over the 16 so it reads 8 ohm (check pics..) This looks like it was done a the factory because the extra 0 is actually stamped into the label (albeit in a different sized font) and the 8 is printed onto the sticker (not handwritten). Anyone have any info regarding this, they both came out of a Laney Bass 100 cab circa mid 60's.

Just learned as well that this model speaker were also used in the early VOX AC30 2X15.

Stamp letters and figures come in cheap sets at the hardware store and 500W out of a 15" is something not even Beyma do. This was stamped in after by someone funny. The 8 ohms is easy to check: just compare the resistance you measure on the thing with the one from your 'normal' 16 ohms. My money is on them being the same, which is also better for you: Put them in parallel and you get 8 ohms of thunder.

yeah, I thought that there was no way that was correct cause they are exactly the same in all respects. I wonder why someone would do that...what would be the point and the guy I got it from got it brand new and never opened it up (as far as he knows but the 60's were a very hazy period for a lot of people.... ?)

definitly gonna get a speaker techie to look at them and then build a cab for them.

It might have been reconed at some point, but somehow I doubt it. As GH says, check DC resistance against the other.

If you want info, the best thing to do would be to look for any stamped codes on the frame as well as any printed numbers on the cone and send them off to Celestion asking for info.
