how do speakers affect the tone

hi guys

i know this is probably been asked before, but when it comes to speakers how much do they affect the tone,

also, does the type of cables you use affect the tone, i assume when going from a head into a cab, one should use speaker cables and not instrument cables

Not sure what your definition of 'tone' is. But different speakers SOUND different

AND different sizes and different speaker configurations also change the overall effect...

Alan has a cool link somewhere on his website that highlights the sonic difference between different speakers... which sounds better or has a better tone is in the ear of the beholder...
I like the 'tone' of an alnico speaker, others would prefer the 'greenback' etc etc...

Cable/tone? I like a good quality cable, but over 3meters... the differences are negligible imo

that is a whole topic on its own, I am sure its been discussed somewhere on the forum... :-\

thanks, the reason im asking is that i got a cab that supposedly does not colour (bugera BG412V) the sound, but as yet have not been able to use it with different amps.

wow i guess it does affect the sound,

also just wanted to find out (as im assuming that installing new speakers is a relatively simple task)

will the housing of the cab make a difference to the speaker tone

Absolutely. The loudspeaker with the cabinet forms a resonant system.

Different loudspeakers with different cabinet size/shape/type and construction materials will give different tonal balances.

what im looking at doing in the future is making a 2X 12 cab, what would be the best type of wood to use or is it based on the type of speakers you get,

someone told me that the main wood used is Supawood, is this the case for heads and cabs,

oh and will the type of wood affect the head at all

Generally speaking birch ply is always a good choice for a guitar cab, most well known guitar cabs are made out of it.

Someone was not far off the mark, it is 'dead' material and will not color your tone, almost ideal for hifi (but you may very well want to color tone in a guitar cab). The downside to a Supawood cab is that is is heavy. I built 2 half open back cabs for 10" or 12" speakers out of hifi speaker leftovers and regret it now. They're a pain to lug around. I might even rebuild them out of birch ply just to save weight.

It will to a certain extent affect the tone of the cab, but the head? Really not eh. Karel Mars has done some postings on the cabs topic, do a search...

I built my 12" cab from shelving pine blockwood. Lightweight and easy to work with.....also sounds really good with my Greenback.

I believe Karel Mars has also used a similar material for cabinet construction.
