Evidently there are at least 2 Proud South Africans on the forum the rest of us are "Bloody Agents" or maybe we are to busy preparing our beautiful land for the [s]grab[/s] Soccer World Cup before FIFA copyrights it as well ;)
http://www.box.net/shared/vf4eteuzo0 Advanced Dialed in my most tinny, distorted, scratchy guitar I could get. Only one take with one instrument Thabo Squonk goes fishing and gets a bit flustered when he actually gets a bite! Takamine, Zoom G2, Sony Laptop, Audacity

Here's my entry http://www.box.net/shared/al3aykrd7k with added cheese, which I hope isn't too much? :P
(old forum) Poll Results: Proudly South African

• Sqonk: 9
• Donovan: 9
I really wanted to enter this one. I don't know where the time is going these days but I always seems to miss the deadline! :-[
Wow, this is a tough one, they're so different and yet both so good. Love the story in Sqonks, can actually hear and picture it.. But love the sounds and feel of Don's.. Great stuff guys!! ?

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA, those are both excellent.

Don, I didn't know Robert Smith was South African?! ?

Don yours is excellent, your recording techniques and skill are top class.
Burst out laughing when I heard it at about midnight last night, almost woke up the wife. The organ and the the shouts are all brilliant.
Good stuff ?

Will have to vote for you ( not much choice is there? ?)
Only two (sorry) but both are excellent. Such good ideas.
I find it interesting how we took different approaches.

Squonk, I like yours. I like the way it tells a story and you can feel the different parts.

I was trying something out with my mixing here. it seems to work. I'm going to experiment a little more then I will share my findings once they are conclusive.
Both different but great. Don had more of an African production style, while Squonk was a more African guitar playing style.

Both great, but I think Squonk's approach was more what was asked, so he squeaks ahead.
@Don - are you trying to leave more space between the instruments in the middle and those which are panned? Didn't really work for me - seemed a bit cluttered in the midfield. I would've filled the gaps with a stereo version of the squeezebox sound, leaving more space in the middle for the guitar to stand out. Or panned the guitar one side and the torture device to the other.
Lol, Torture device? which was that? the Accordian? ha ha

no I added a pad in the background. Well, not quite a pad but a constant crowd noise to fill some space.

I didn't pay much attention to panning this time around I'm afraid. I was going for the live feel. I think it works, it sounds like a live recording to me. (even without the cheesy cheering at the end ?)

Well done guys, you got that authentic South African sound. Squonk, yours reminds me of a sound track to a children's program, very peaceful. Donovan, nice mixture of local themes.

For some reason I can smell boerewors braaing now.

You both get my vote, but I see I can only vote for one, and I don't know which one ended up with the vote, so it's more of a gamble than a vote now.
Well done guys! Both are excellent tunes, really hard to choose.

Phew this was a close one. I am going to call it in because those who haven't voted yet probably never will. Squonk wins it by a hair this week and get to PM me the next challenge ASAP. :goodtimes:
Nice one Squonk!! :applause:

glad it wasn't me, I have no idea for any more compo's... ?
Thanks Don

But it was only by a hair ?

Have PM'ed Rene.
