Perrformed at a talent show tonight! The energy was awesome but since I was playing "Always with you Always with me" (by Satriani of course), the crowd seemed to be falling asleep... And that was a challenging song so I messed up a bit on the legato part but hey! Experience is experience. Hopefully getting the results tomorrow

First gigs are always rockin'... Most crowds, unless guitarists will not fall in love with Satch, he's technical and too guitary.. They wana hear john mayer and pop songs. That's the choice you godda make, become a guitarist or become a crowd pleaser... Sometimes the lines can be blurred, but often, there is a big distinction..

mmmmmmm thats not quite true...... every great guitarist is a crowd pleaser to their following in their genre.........

i think it's more a case of playing to your audience................

cos being a performing musician is about playing to people............. and is show biz ....... and if you can't entertain or keep their attention then rather stay in the rehearsal room ,

but just as much as a satch song might not wow a conservative talent show crowd, a reputable classical guitarist can't perform in a dance club ........ or heavy metal venue ..

so rather change your quote to say .... "play for your target audience.......... " which is wise advise to anyone performing live

but i don't think "be a guitarist or be a crowd pleaser " is valid at all...........

BUT THAT ASIDE...GOOD LUCK D-MAN IN THE COMPETITION, IT'S FABULOUS YOU GETTING TO PLAY OUT ..... LET US KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.....

Keira, as I saw you had replied I instantly knew what I had said didn't actually made sense.. ? So I meant no offence in saying that, but you are correct a Satch song will please the right crowds, unfortunately there aren't many that form that crowd in SA. :/

Classical and fingerstyle guitar I think is usually appreciated by all, I don't think I've ever met someone who doesn't like or can't stand a good classical guitarist. Obviously the setting can't be a club or something.

So, I do apologize and agree with what you said! ?

Well done on your first live performance. This, as Fingerpicker says, is where the rubber meets the road. It's a different (and better!) deal than playing in your study at home.

Actually I'm quite intrigued by this. I'm assuming that you played electric guitar. Now I cut my performing teeth (such as they are) at TJs. Playing solo on acoustic guitar. ANd it was great because they're a supportive bunch there - the guys running the club and the audience.

But how do you take these first steps with electric guitar and that particular piece? Was it you and a band? Is their a scratch band that backs all the contestants? Did you play with a backing track and wast it of your own making?

It's vastly more difficult than doing the acoustic thing. Amps to be set up and so on (or mandate that everybody plays with a multi-fx and amp-modelling system).

I was thinking that what would be good would be a sort of electric TJs - but logistically it's more difficult.

In my matric year I played a Neil Zaza song called "I'm Alright" at our annual "talent Show" and even though the audience were a bunch of wannabe gangsters and the other acts were things as lame as a fashion show (I mean not to be dick but where's the talent in walking down a ramp? especially seeing as the clothes weren't made or designed by a student they were just regular clothes and from what I could see this was just an opportunity for a bunch of girls to stroke their ego's) anyway the song wen't down well and all the various people cheered, even though within the next few hours or so they were no doubt listening to the latest puff daddy album or whatever. What I'm trying to say here is that sometimes the response is good, sometimes it's bad and seeing as I got a good response out of a bunch of ignorant "gaam" kids it just goes to show you can never be sure of the response in the world of widdly widdly guitar music ? so don't blame yourself or the song, just keep on doing what you're doing and loving it cause at the end of the day you'll find the right audience eventually - you've just gotta get their attention ? and remember in the great words of the great Mattias Eklundh: "Grow your own moustache"

Well done D-Man, and congratulations for taking that bold step. I always say to myself, if you put yourself at under 5 on a scale of 1 to 10, you can only get better........ and you should be proud of yourself doing a song like "Always with you,............", on your first outing......... you got guts!!!!

Well I was playing with a backtrack and my friend was playing rythm. Well he was actually playing a power chord version o the bass line (LOL).

I saw a video of the performance today and it wasn't to bad. I had a few mutes here and there but it was good

We're through to the finals, which are on friday and I'm super psyched.

It actually went awesome last night.

An MIDI/GP5 tab for a backtrack, two ibanez-playing guitarist playing through Marshall Jackhammers with a Roland Cube and a Marshall and a hall full of people singing to "Umbrella"... An unforgettable experience!

Talent comps were fun for me back in the day. Only ever won one of them.... which was super fun.
Really though, I dont think its fair to judge people on their expression or music, because its subjective.
The best thing that comes from those comps is the helpful criticism, I did the RBF comp for 3 years in a row, and by the end I had pages and pages from jusges of little things to work on, so that helped.
However it will never be the case that you become famous from talent comps.

...why not. Think Idols...! ? .....have you ever considered entering Idols ? :?

I think it's the experience of a talent comp that's invaluable.
