The Nokia site is legal but you'll have hassles getting the tracks onto your iPod (I burn them to a CD, rip them off the CD and hey presto). I also use eMusic.com and 7digital.com but I know that both have often stopped accepting registrations from South Africa.

Site is registered to an individual who lives in Belize, Central America (formerly British Honduras). However, their servers are based in Russia (the site used to be gomusic.ru), so you decide if you want to hand out your CC details. Caveat Emptor.

They do say this in their FAQ:

2.1. All compositions and phonograms are available on GoMusicNow.com on a basis of corresponding agreements with the copyright owners and copyright and allied rights collective management organizations.

So they are claiming to be legal.

They don't get a great review on www.mp3obsession.com: http://www.mp3obsession.com/reviews/gomusicnow/

Well I checked out some of the recommended sites (all seem to be in Russia) and I'm dubious about the legality issues - even if they proclaim that they're legal.

I searched for "Richard Thompson". The albums presented for my consideration included a bootleg, a fan-club release (not issued on any commercial label and long out of print) and a CD that had been given away with Uncut magazine.

I'm not an expert on Wainwright, but I have 6 or 7 of his including that one, and I think it's a pretty good album. My current Wainwright faves are "Career Moves" and "History".

The nokia store is a bit pricey. I would rather pay an extra R20 or so and actually have a CD rather then digitaly owning it. However they do have local artist which gomusicnow and others donot seem to have. Its kind of crazy how a website can make you pay for something that is illegal, I may as well download for website that a free then.

The site that offered the bootleg was legalsounds.com, which get a good rating from mp3obsession. It looked so dodgy that I forwarded a message to Thompson's people via the fan club secretary.

I got a reply from his manager

Thanks for the heads up.

LegalSounds is a Russian pirate site which has been operating for years, and nobody has been able to stop them. They pay nothing to the artists or songwriters.

I got one of those Nokia "comes with music" deal things as an upgrade today. I loaded the software and so far so good. I've looked for a lot of stuff I couldn't find locally and I found it. All of Andy McKee's stuff (even the latest Joyland album). All downloading now and freeeeee!!! and legal!!!! ?

This nokia deal has puzzled me a bit. How the heck do they get the record companies to agree with it or is it a right of sorts that they purchase to do with as they wish? What is to stop a person who gets one of theese comes with music to share his login details and 50 people download like crazy for a year?

It uses WDRM 10/11. Basically the MP3's are encoded with digital copyright, you can only use it on the computer and portable device registered with that specific DRM license.

From Nokia's site:

Content owners may use different types of digital rights management (DRM) technologies to protect their intellectual property, including copyrights. This device uses various types of DRM software to access DRMprotected content. With this device you can access content protected with WMDRM 10, OMA DRM 1.0, OMA DRM 1.0 forward lock, and OMA DRM 2.0. If certain DRM software fails to protect the content, content owners may ask that such DRM software's ability to access new DRM-protected content be revoked. Revocation may also prevent renewal of such DRM-protected content already in your device.
Revocation of such DRM software does not affect the use of content protected with other types of DRM or the use of non-DRM-protected content.

Digital rights management (DRM) protected content comes with an associated licence that defines your rights to use the content.

I wonder if there are any Russian websites on this planet that are legal?? I don't think I've ever seen one ever.

Any website that ends in .ru or .ng or .sk or any other strange variation I tend to avoid like a Jonas Brothers album.
