Tonerider in single coil mode

Hi everyone,

I've got one of the Tonerider Alnico IV humbuckers in the neck position of an Ibanez but I'm not sure which coil to make the active one in single coil mode. At the moment I've got the coil with the adjustable screws facing towards the neck but the other coil (the inner coil without the screws) is the active one.

How do I make the other coil active instead? ???

Easy - if the pickup lead is long enough just physically turn it around 180 degrees and screw it back into the pickup ring ?

Dan77, you can indeed do that - no problem other than the bobbin with the adjustable screws will now sit on the "wrong" side.

Floydoid, you can also keep the pickup in the correct position and just swap the red and green coil wires around. However you will most likely have to turn the wires around on the other pickups to avoid being out-of-phase.

If you have just one other Tonerider humbucker in the bridge change the red and green around here too. But there's a snag - if you're going to change both pickups' wires around then the active coil in the bridge pickup (in single coil mode) will now be the "other" coil (to what it was before). Then you'll have to turn the bridge humbucker around again if you don't like the tone in single coil mode.

Now that I think about it - Just go with Dan77, it's probably the easiest!

Inner coils are preferred by most players because of the very Stratty quack with both pickups on. If you really want to get your outer coils, you can either do as Anre says and swap the hot and cold wires on both humbuckers, or you can rewire to short the common wires to hot instead of cold (which keeps phase intact).
