Compound radius necks. Enlightenment sought.

I quite like the neck on my Larrivee. Looking on the website I notice that they describe the neck as compound radius - 17" to 21".

So this says to me that the curvature of the fingerboard is changing along the neck.

Why do they do that? I presume this is a more difficult thus more expensive way of building the neck.

I also saw that and I dont really know. I assumed it was for playing barre chords down the bottom side and picking up top. But they look clever so I reckoned it's just the way to do it and I saw it some other places as well.
