This weeks challenge is from Bob
think "proudly South African" for the next challenge. However I would like to expand upon this a little. "South African" too often turns out to be recycled Johnny Clegg riffs. This country is culturally far richer than that and I would like to challenge the good folks of GFSA to dig a little deeper. Think of the Cape Malay sounds that Steve Newman or The Genuines made use of. The organ-driven township jive of the Soul Brothers that Bright Blue paid homage to. Think of Groot Marico, of the Indian and Arab flavours that have come into our rich cultural mix. Maybe think of the Western cape coast which has it's own vibe, or ox wagons in a circle under the Free State sky with a camp fire burning.
And I hope that votes will be cast not on the basis of chops on display, but on the basis of the feel, the way that the entries capture some of the complex flavour of South Africa.
See what you can make of that by next Monday evening.
