A key change with a pedal?
THat's not quite what it's about. He's not using the capo just as a way of moving the nut. Watch carefully - at one point he's fingering a chord and keeps that fingering while the capo is repeatedly lifted and placed down again. The fingered notes won't change, the open ones will.
I don't see any reason why this couldn't be combined with open capos.
I think that as it stands it's not that practical a proposition. It would require installation and setup. I'd like to know how easy it is to move the capo to a different position. Clearly a spare guitar would need the same equipment installed - which would mean two sets of pedals on stage.
But it's interesting. Where do you draw the line with things like this? I already use 2 capos at the same time - and since I nicked that trick from my friend Mike Burger I know I'm not the only guy doing that. I read an interview in a magazine last year with a guy who uses 4 or 5 partial capos on the guitar at the same time.
