There is a hike/long walk at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve this weekend. This is near Mondeor. It has some interesting historical artefacts (like the site where Barney Barnato tried to build a dam) and has been stocked with some wild life - including springbuck and zebra. It's also a very good location for birdwatching.
See
http://www.knra.co.za/ for details on the reserve and it's location.
It's this Sunday, the 25th.
Start at SILENT POOL (see web site). Registration is from 7:30 and the walk starts at 9:00.
No charge, but a donation to the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association of R20 per hiker would be appreciated.
Booking not required, but Johannesburg City Parks and the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association reserve the right to limit the number of participants depending on prevailing circumstances.
Bring a water bottle which may be re-filled at one or two strategic points along the way, sensible walking shoes or hiking boots, a hat, sunscreen and cell phone for safety and security purposes. Food will not be available, so if you require nourishment, please bring your own.
Each hiker will be required to register, to sign an indemnity, to provide a cell phone number for emergencies and to sign out.
Each hiker will be provided with a map and a card listing emergency telephone numbers. Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association guides will be stationed at strategic points along the way to provide assistance or guidance, if required. Refreshments will be available for sale upon completion of the walk.
Do not get too close to or harass the wild animals. Respect their territory.
I'll not be there. I have torn ligament in my knee that rules out such a walk. But I have walked there in the past and it is beautiful area.
