Gearhead Does anyone know of a local source for sliced African Mahogany or Sapele? I am looking at building an acoustic from scratch but not really interested in pre-cut sides and back. The alternative way (sawing and thicknessing) is also rather expensive. I suppose luthiers don't all shop at LMII, do they?
Wizard When I was hunting for fretboard blanks I ran into the same problem. The wood shops only sell rough planks, typically at least 22mm thick. Rare Woods does have a section where they have sliced up a bunch of wood specifically for guitar making; but their supply and type of wood goes through seasonal fluctuations
Bob-Dubery There must be some local source - at least for woods that are grown in Southern Africa. Mervyn Davis is using Kiaat for back and sides on classical guitars, and I doubt he's sourcing that from LMII. The question is whether he gets it already cut down to the necessary thickness or whether he does that himself.
