G'day everyone,

Just thought I'd give you some feedback on a set of Tonerider pickups I installed recently. Following my previous posts about the high prices of American pickups and the so-called hand wound varieties I just thought I'd take the time out and share this with you.

Although a friend of mine impressed me with the Tonerider Pure Vintage pickups in his Mexican Strat I was a bit apprehensive since the prices looked too good to be true. I eventually ordered the Classic Blues set through the online store in Cape Town, received the pickups 2 days later and installed them one Saturday afternoon into my 'practice' Japanese Strat. Well, I gotta tell you, I have been so impressed with these babies that I haven't played any of my other guitars for weeks now. The packaging was excellent, the quality and feel of the product is excellent, the wiring diagrams, screws and nylon (rubber springy things) bushes are very good, the magnets won't cut your hands to shreds, I love the grey vintage look of the pickups under the cover and the fact that they feature the authentic vintage colour-coded wiring. You can actually see and feel that they've been wax potted too so it's not just a marketing ploy.

The sound - as a calibrated set (with Alnico 5 magnets) the volume across the three pickups is excellent and I can flick madly through the toggle switch without any one overpowering the other two. The neck pickup is very well balanced with the others and not too soft at all. I initially assumed (wrongly) that the Classic Blues set would be a nod to players like Stevie Ray and would be "harsher" sounding but it isn't like that at all. These pups are even creamier sounding than the Pure Vintage set my friend Pete has in his guitar. I had a look at the website and noticed that they had slightly less output, similar to early 50's Strats. That explains why! Initially I had the pickups set close to the strings (like I do with my humbuckers) and although the sound was good, it wasn't great, like the ones on my Eric Johnson Strat. As soon as I moved them about 2mm further away from the strings however everything changed and the sound just "clicked".

The sound then? (in the manner of Jeremy Clarkson)

Bridge alone - clear, chimey, clear big lows - A great Strat tone!
Bridge & middle - I cannot help thinking "Sultans of Swing". Clear highs, a definite quack, nice upper mids
Middle alone - a sound similar to Robert Cray or Clapton - nice quack, good clearly defined mids, good definition, great for soloing AND rhythm playing
Middle & neck - I've never liked this sound on ANY Strat and think its a watered down version of position 2's sound. No opinions here except that it's a nice mellow sound like Stevie Ray on Tin Pan Alley (kinda)
Neck alone - My favorite sound! Big bottom, evenly defined mids and smooth rich highs. I love this sound with overdrive - it just sings and has great sustain.

So, to come back to my original post of a few weeks ago - I still believe that most pickups are overpriced and over-marketed and these Tonerider pups have certainly proved it again!

Well, that's my first "pickup review" in a nutshell. I hope I didn't bore you and if you want to know anything else just ask.

Rich

I'm not a recording person at all but if you can give me some ideas of how to get the sound from my guitar and onto the forum I'll definitely give it a try! I'm not a good player but I'd love to share the sounds.

How do I do it? :-[

OK, I'm not sure of how to get my guitar sounds onto Guitar Forum but I found some interesting soundfiles on Youtube.

      Here they are:

I would appreciate if someone can give me a short guide as to how to get my guitar sounds onto this website it would be really cool. Then I will make an effort to do something about it!

        Thanks.

        Rich.
Rich if you have a PC and a mic you can record. Or even a digital camera will work (although not as well)

Option A: take a video with your camera, create a Youtube/box.net account and upload it there. Then paste the link here for us to see.

Option B: Download Audacity, it is a free Digital Audio Workstation. Try get a good audio interface, ie a fancy soundcard and record onto the DAW.
Then export as MP3, upload to Box.net and paste the link here.

Option C: Get a portable recorder like the Tascam, Digitech or the Boss Micro BR.

It will be easier to choose a method, and then ask us here and we can talk you through how to set it up etc. No matter which route you take someone here has done it and can help. Sorry for the lack of concrete help...

I use PC based recording and a Boss BR600.

          Also, read here.

Just thought I'd mention to anyone interested in Tonerider pups - These guys are really trying something. I picked up on an 8hour only sale they had on Monday and was surprised to see the Generators going for R700 a set, including VAT and shipping - can this be true? I mean, what the *?

[PS - EXCELLENT new forum everyone. It looks a lot more PRO!]

Hi Rich - They've got another one just like Monday this coming Friday again. I believe the first one was only for Cape Town and I was a bit ***** off ? Just go to their facebook page cause this is where they announce it.
You guys missed the previous sales by the sound of it. I got a set of Classic Blues in March for R700.00 complete, inclusive of VAT.

All you gotta do is join the Tonerider Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tonerider-Pickups/184956872049 and you will get the email messages about a sale the next day or in two days time or whatever.

You have to join and become a fan of them in order to get the insider info ahead of time. Their sales are normally only for 6 or 8 hours at a time and if you miss it the price goes back up in a few hours. It's easy to miss but its really worth it.

                ?

That's strange man. I can only speak for myself and I've received 8hr sale notifications twice already. Isn't it just something in your Facebook settings or something like that?

Why don't you send them a message and ask about it. In fact the owner is Andre Meyer and he is actually here on the Guitar Forum. His handle is AndreM and he's a cool oke!
                      Hi everyone,

If anyone didn't get the notices I apologize. I was unaware! It's probably just Facebook - it's happened before. Just join and keep your eyes open! I have to respect the rules here so I can't say too much.

                      Cheers!

                      cool oke ? (Thanks Danie)
Before I forget - thanks Rich for YouTube links. I've actually used them too! ?
